Former CBS news legendary anchorman, Walter Cronkite died at the age of 92 this week. He was known to many as “the most trusted man in America” along with nickname of “Uncle Walter”. He reported the news for almost 20 years from 1962 – 1981 and he was the one people turned to for their breaking news and information. He was there to report the devastating news of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, as well as he was there for the ground breaking landing on the moon by the Americans in 1969. When he retired, Dan Rather took over his spot at the news desk. Cronkite was well known for his parting comment each night “And that’s the way it is.” He is survived by his 3 children and 4 grandsons. He was married to his wife Betsy for 64 years but she passed away in 2005. He was part of our history and he will be missed.
We have been so obsessed by the Gosselins and their drama that we have not talked about Nadya Suleman, the Octo-mom in quite some time. Well she is back in the news with a bit of drama of her own. Her 2 year old son Caleb was rushed to the hospital after ingesting chemicals from one of his sibling’s volcano kit. He actually drank the solution and ended up vomiting it up. Just to be safe the paramedics were called. Luckily he was fine and after just a few hours mother and son were back home with the rest of their family. Wow that felt good to talk about her, I have missed the Octomom!! And while we are speaking about one “supermom” why not share what our other “supermom” was up to this weekend. Kate Gosselin and her 8 kids were in New York City this weekend for a TLC marketing event. Kate, minus Jon, plus 8 kids, 2 babysitters and their security arrived at the event and stayed for several hours. In addition to the Gosselins, the Duggar Family was there with their 18 children as well as Jen Arnold and Bill Klein of “Little People: Just Married”. “Jon and Kate Plus 8” should return to the air August 3rd. We will see.
A Beatle was back and performed at the new Citi Field for the first concert. Paul McCartney put on a fabulous show and the crowd went crazy. Ironically it was 44 year ago in 1965 that Paul and the other 3 Beatles performed at Shea Stadium. Paul sang old Beatles tunes like “Drive My Car”, “Got To Get You Into My Life”,” Eleanor Rigby”, “Back in the USSR”, “Let it Be” and “Hey Jude” to name just a few. McCartney had a special guest help him out with one of the songs. Billy Joel was there and sang “I Saw Her Standing There” with Paul. Billy Joel was the one who closed down Shea Stadium last summer and was back for this event. Paul also took time to honor two members of the Beatles who have both died, John Lennon and George Harrison. He played an acoustic song he wrote awhile back to honor John Lennon and played the ukulele to sing “Something” to honor George Harrison. It is just something to hear Paul McCartney sing all those all songs which have such a place in our musical history.
In wedding news…actress Leelee Sobieski is engaged to her boyfriend Adam Kimmel. So far no wedding date has been set. Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit got married to his sweetheart, Esther Nazarov. He posted the news via Twitter. A new hairdo I must tell you about and show you. I am not sure what was going through Rihanna’s mind at the time but she decided to cut her hair with a twist…a Mohawk…interesting, what do you think? Love it or hate it?? My votes…hate it!!!
There is a little bit of this and a little bit of that going on today in the world of gossip. To start with we are going to be seeing a lot of Mariah Carey in the near future as she gets set to release her new album “Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel” at the end of August. Tonight she will premiere her new video “Obsessed” on “America’s Got Talent”. There is already hubbub about this video, first off it was leaked on the internet, but all copies have been removed. Secondly in the video Mariah is dressed up and looks eerily like Eminem and some are saying this is a response to his song “Bagpipes from Bagdad” where he talks about Mariah and their relationship from years back and why is she obsessed with him. Now Mariah and husband Nick Cannon both deny that the song/video has anything to do with Eminem but really could it be a coincidence? I guess we will just have to wait and see for ourselves once the video is out. You can also see Mariah on the “Today Show” in the Toyota concert series on August 28th. Also performing during the month will be Flo Rida and Natasha Bedingfield.
Renee Zellweger will be reprising her role as Bridget Jones for the third time. Typically Zellweger has gained 30 pounds to play Bridget Jones and this time will be no different. She says although the first two days of eating anything she wants is great the up and down on her body takes its toll and is very difficult. The premise for this 3rd movie sounds fun…Bridget is almost 40 and is in full baby mode and wants to have one before it is too late. You know a lot of good comedy can surely come from that topic. Filming is expected to take place at the end of the year. That should be plenty of time to start packing on the pounds.
Another old time favorite is back and looking fabulous for the release of her new album. Whitney Houston was in London for a party in her honor to unveil her new album, “I Look to You” which will be available September 1. Clive Davis, Chief Creative Officer of Sony Music and long time friend was at her side, and played 9 tracks from the album which still is being worked on. Whitney had some big names collaborating with her on this album. She had help from, Alicia Keys, R Kelly, Diane Warren, Stargate and a duet with Akon for the song ”Like I Never Left”.
Brad Paisley is headed to the White House with Alison Krause to perform for the Obama’s, members of Congress and the White House staff. The main reason for their visit is actually to help Michelle Obama with an educational workshop she has put in place for middle school and high school students to help encourage arts and arts education. Last month her focus was on Jazz and in the fall her next workshop will focus on Classical music. The concert is actually just a bonus.
Limp Bizkit fans are in for a special treat from the band. Together for the first time in the states in 8 years the guys are going to be giving tickets away free for a concert event in Las Vegas on July 18th. The concert will take place at the Pearl Concert Theatre which is in the Palms Casino Resort. Fans will receive 2 tickets but it is on a first come first serve basis so you can imagine it is going to be pretty crazy. I wouldn’t be surprised if people are already waiting in line. In addition to the free tickets, fans will get a free t-shirt that was designed exclusively for that show. The band is also allowing fans to design the concert by picking their favorites songs and voting, and the songs that win will be the ones that are sung at the concert. You can vote at pickrset.com/bands/limpbizkit .How cool is that? What an amazing experience if you are one of the chosen few to actually make it in. Good Luck and have fun!!
Do not mess with Billy Bob Thornton, which is exactly what a Canadian DJ found out when trying to interview Billy Bob and his band, the Boxmasters. Billy Bob pulled a Joaquin Phoenix and was just weird and rude. Actually he was mad because the DJ mentioned ever so briefly Billy Bob’s movie career during the introduction, and that was apparently a big no no. Billy Bob did not want it mentioned at all – he was there as a musician only. So when it came time to answer the DJ’s questions it was all, I don’t know, or answering with some unrelated comment. The other guys in the band seemed ok and luckily led the interview but you just have to check out the video because it is amazing. Then the band, which is on tour with Willie Nelson, went to perform a song, but they did it without Billy Bob, who is the drummer. He said he just doesn’t lug the drums around. Ok, then. It was wild and did not shine any positive light on Billy Bob. The poor DJ did mange the situation as well as could be expected. Billy Bob Thornton was on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” last night and talked about how shocked he was that people were so interested with the interview gone wrong in Canada. Then with the attitude that got him in trouble in the first place Billy Bob said, “It gave humpback geeks all over the world something to do for a couple of days.” Although Thornton was a good boy with Jimmy Kimmel he does say that if he is not happy with the line of questioning of an interviewer his behavior does tend to go in the same direction as the Canadian interview, so really it was not all that remarkable. Mr. Personality right!?
Mia Farrow is taking it to the extreme to bring attention to the situation in Darfur. Farrow, who is 64 and a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, is planning to stop eating to show her support of the people there. Her goal is to not eat for 3 weeks…I didn’t even know that was possible. She has gained 9 pounds and hopes that will help as she has been told she could lose up to ¼ of her body mass during her starvation. She plans on only drinking water and will get her blood tested after 2 weeks to check on organ damage. Farrow has been to visit the region 11 times and it is such a desperate situation she felt she had no other choice at this time but to take desperate action. Her goal is to get our government to take some action and make Darfur a priority and help bring peace there. Good luck Mia and be careful!
And yet another use for Twitter…engagement announcements. That is how Fred Durst, from Limp Bizkit, announced his recent engagement to fiancée Ester Nazarov. “It’s on!!!Break out the bubbly!!” Thanks for sharing Fred! In other Twitter news Ellen DeGeneres has also reached 1 million followers this week. Last week that was news this week it is becoming common. After Oprah’s first tweet a week ago Friday the site saw a 43 % increase in users over the previous Friday. And speaking of Ellen…Lindsay Lohan opens up about her break up with Samantha Ronson on today’s show saying that is was basically a surprise to her and that she still loves Samantha. She is going to take some time and focus on her career and try and get that back on track (again).
