While rock, alternative rock, indie rock, or whatever is the most accurate and accepted term for the genre has gone the way of summer music festivals, country remains an industry still enjoying the touring season. One of the biggest country acts in the summer of 2012 is the Brothers of the Sun Tour. Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw are heading out together for another summer of tour dates around the country. This time the duo is on a 22-city schedule, with the first show of the Brothers of the Sun Tour beginning June 2, 2012.
Kenny Chesney is out on tour to not only continue his development as the country version of Jimmy Buffett. He is out to promote his 13th studio album, Welcome to the Fishbowl. The album is due out later this month making Kenny Chesney tickets special this time around. The lead single from the album is a duet with his tour mate, Tim McGraw. The song has actually been the second highest charting single since the Billboard charts were initially tabulated by Nielsen SoundScape.
McGraw is back with an album of his own. Emotional Traffic is his 11th release and it has already had time to top the country album chart and go platinum. The lead single from the album is “Better Than I Used to Be”, a top ten release.
Chesney and McGraw are co-headlining the concert series and Jake Owen and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals are coming along as the support. Owen is rather new to the scene. He has three studio albums, each reaching Top Ten status but non so far have gone gold or platinum. Grace Potter is bring rock to country and has been busy touring since way back in 2005. She has made a name for herself among those in the industry. Now, with the help of Chesney and McGraw, she will be making herself known on a mainstream level.
Simply put, Kenny Chesney is a touring sensation. Pollstar reported that he earned $84.6 million in 2011 on the Goin’ Coastal Tour. That number was good enough to put him in the Top 5 selling concerts of the year. He is likely to repeat in 2012, when he heads out on the Brothers of the Sun Tour with Tim McGraw.
Unlike McGraw, Kenny Chesney is not promoting a new album. He will continue to tour to support Hemingway’s Bottle, his 2010 album. It took a year, but the album finally went platinum, in December. It certainly helped that the album had three number one singles: “The Boys of Fall”, “Live a Little”, and “Somewhere With Potter”. Right now the album has a fifth single out, “Reality”, which has entered the Top 10. It even has a new music video.
Chesney and McGraw will be joined by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and Jake Owen. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals were featured on Kenny Chesney’s “You and Tequila”, which reached number three on the Billboard Country charts and went Gold according to the RIAA. Owen is touring in support of its own number one album, Barefoot Blue Jean Night.
The tour begins on June 2, 2012 at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa and ends on August 25, 2012 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, the second of a two night show. So far the Brothers of the Sun Tour has sold nearly 300,000 Kenny Chesney concert tickets and is on pace to become Chesney’s eighth consecutive to sell more than a million.
There is some disappointing news for Sugarland fans. Jennifer Nettles has been struggling with voice problems since January and it has gotten to the point where the band has had to cancel several shows so she can take a bit of time and give her voice a rest. Nettles posted a video message to the fans letting them know the situation. She says, “I sang too much. And I blew my voice. It’s like a muscle. It’s like any other part of your body. If you sprain it or strain it, then you have to heal it, or else you will break it. And I don’t want to break it. I want us to come back out there and see you.” The band has been busy in the studio and on the road and that is what has caused the problem. The group was supposed to perform with Kenny Chesney this past Saturday and then with Keith Urban on Sunday and they had to cancel both shows. They had to cancel some shows back in 2008 as well as take about 10 days off in May of 09’ as well. How frustrating for Jennifer, the band and fans. Hopefully some well needed rest will help.
Good news for Keifer Sutherland. All charges have been dropped in that unusual head butting case back in May. It was said that Keifer bashed heads with someone after he accidently bumped into Brooke Shields at an after party. Keifer had been charged with 3rd degree assault from the incident. The D.A. said, “We declined to prosecute after a full investigation, and that included speaking to the complaining witness who was quite uncooperative. Therefore the D.A. declined to prosecute.” It appears that Keifer and Jack McCullough the man who bumped into Brooke worked it out amongst themselves and this also led to the charges been dropped against him. Good news for Keifer considering he is in the midst of serving a 5 year probation sentence from a D.U.I charge back in 2007.
Marc Anthony loves his Miami Dolphins. In fact he loves them so much he is now a minority owner of the football team. One of the new main owners of the team, Stephen Ross, an entrepreneur, wants to focus on rebranding the team and he feels a way to fill up the stadium is “with a blend of entertainment and winning football.” Sound like a smart plan to me. Gloria Estefan and her husband are minority owners in the team as well. Speaking of blending entertainment with football…Marc Anthony will sing the national anthem at the game on October 12th against the New York Jets. The game will be televised on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.”
Who starts these rumors anyway? Yesterday it was reported that Jamie Kennedy proposed to his girlfriend, Jennifer Love Hewitt (from the Ghost Whisperer), while performing in California at the Laugh Factory. Both Kennedy’s and Hewitt’s reps are saying that “there is no truth to the report.” Jennifer did say in a recent interview that “by this time next year, if we’re not planning something, then there’s a situation.” They are a sweet couple; I hope he does pop the question.
You may not be surprised by this statement but I do not think Lady Gaga is going to be winning any fashion awards. In fact she better be careful, because the fashion police might just arrest her at any given moment. The other day though she wore a doozie during an interview in Germany. She was wearing a top made completely of Kermit the frog stuffed toys. It was atrocious….there was even a frog on her head. Take a look. How she left her house in this and then appeared on TV, I just do not even understand, but hey that is just my opinion. What do you think?
Conan O’Brien welcomed his first cast from a Broadway musical to perform on his show last night. The cast from “Hair”, all 50 members flew from New York to L.A. to perform on their day off. The performance was choreographed special just for Conan’s shows and new set. They looked like they were having a great time and if you haven’t seen the show, just watching the cast made you want to run out and do so. There is something about all the peace and love of the 60’s that is just magical, not to mention those clothes. “Hair” actually won a Tony Award this year for Best Revival of a Musical. Watch the cast sing the title song, “Hair” and “Let the Sunshine In” from Conan last night.
Kenny Chesney says he is in a relationship, but this time he is with a regular person not a celebrity and that is making a huge difference. He is also keeping this relationship more private, which he says is hard to do. All he will say is that she is a nurse and “levelheaded”. He also says that,” She’s a real normal girl. Which is what I need, because my life isn’t normal.” Chesney is currently on tour and has some pretty crazy stuff going on during the tour. One thing he does is”soar over the audience in a flying chair” which was inspired by Van Halen, who in the day did something similar but on a surfboard. A tiki bar is also a staple backstage and was inspired by Sammy Hagar (formerly with Van Halen) and his Cabo Wabo bar. Life is going just find these days for the superstar. Other country news that should excite many country fans, Big & Rich the country duo are back together for a summer tour. The two promise plenty of their old hits but will also include songs from each of their solo careers as well.
No one knows better than Jon Gosselin how harsh the media and the public can be and his new girlfriend, Hailey Glassman, is finding this out the hard way. After being spotted in France with Jon Gosselin the internet and media immediately went into a frenzy to find out about this new woman in Jon’s life and what they found and had to say was anything but kind. Not only is she being called a wild party girl, there are actually pictures on line to prove it along with a mug shot from 2005 when she was arrested for possession of marijuana, hashish and hashish oil. In 2007 she was also in some trouble for drinking underage. Both cases were dropped and she ended up on probation for the drug charges. IT’s not exactly a pretty picture in general but especially for someone hanging out with the famous father of 8. It is also being said that she is just with Jon to become famous. Hailey was so upset by all the media bashing that she laid low during her last night in France and left Jon to go out partying by himself. Jon also arrived solo at JFK airport today. Can you even imagine what Kate has to say about all this?
It is almost time for the “MTV Video Music Awards”. The show is scheduled for September 13 in New York and the host this year will be comic Russell Brand for the second year in a row. He is a very controversial choice and really stirred things up last year with some comments about the Jonas Brothers, which he even ended up apologizing for afterwards. So as always it should be an interesting evening with a little bit of unexpected to go with it. The show is also starting to line up its talent for the evening and Taylor Swift is the first to sign on to perform during the show. At this point it is being said she will sing a “never before heard version” of her song, “You Belong With Me”.
Tonight is Country music’s big night and all the stars are headed to Las Vegas for the 44th Academy of Country Music Awards. The show will air live tonight on CBS at 8:00 so tune in to see all the big winners (and losers.) IT should be a great show with scheduled performances by Rascal Flatts, Sugarland, Toby Keith and Taylor Swift, and as I mentioned earlier this week Miley Cyrus will be on stage singing “The Climb” from her new Hannah Montana movie. Reba McEntire will be hosting the event for her 11th time. There is big competition tonight for the Entertainer of the Year award. Carrie Underwood is the sole woman up against 4 men in this category. She is competing against George Strait, Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban. I am personally hoping she can do it and beat those 4 men…good luck Carrie; you have had an amazing year!
It looks like 3 year old Mercy James from Malawi will not be going home with Madonna as planned but is going back to the orphanage. First the judge rejected the adoption claim based on the fact that Madonna hadn’t been a resident in Malawi for the 18 -24 months requirement before adopting. As one can imagine Madonna was very upset and has already started the appeal process, but Lourdes as well, was devastated by the turn of events. In addition to that, it seems that the baby’s biological father has stepped forward. James Kambewa is claiming he is the baby’s father and he never knew that she was alive. After getting the baby’s 15 year old mother pregnant he fled. The baby’s mother then died several days after the baby was born and Kambewa said he thought the baby had died as well. So now he is back and claiming that he wants his daughter. HE of course will need to take a DNA test to see if he is indeed that father and then he says he will be ready to meet Mercy. So we will just have to wait and see what happens. All I have to say is regardless of the new information about the father, why would the government make you be a resident for so long? I just feel that if there is better opportunities for these children besides living in the orphanage why make it so difficult? Absolutely, take some time and make sure you have a good family to adopt these children but asking perspective parents to live in the country for almost 2 years seems a lot to ask and who knows what other requirements there are. Hey Madonna can adopt me. Regardless what you think of her and Angelina Jolie they are truly helping these children and giving them a better life then they have in an orphanage. I just think anyone who is willing to bring these children into their lives and try to provide a better life them should be commended.
It was a night to remember at David Lynch’s “Change Begins Within” concert and benefit at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall this weekend. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr both performed solo sets during the night. Paul was actually headline the show and after his set he did what everyone hoped he would….he called up his old friend Ringo and the two performed on stage together for the first time in 6 years. How cool is that?? The two sang “With a Little Help From My Friends”, “Cosmically Conscious” and “I Saw Her Standing There”. I bet that was incredible not only to hear them together but to see them together as well. The event was a bit out there but I guess that is no surprise with David Lynch. He organized the event to increase awareness and funds for his foundation for “Consciousness – Based Education and World Peace, a charity that works to promote the late Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s Transcendental Meditation technique. A lot of stars and performers showed up to show their support including Howard Stern, Jerry Seinfeld, Sheryl Crow, Eddie Vedder, Moby.
