The Minnesota sports fans must be in agony. Not only did they just have to listen to Brad Childress tell the public he is going to let Brett Favre waffle all summer long, but they just found out that the best pitcher they have, Closer Joe Nathan, will miss the entire season to go under the knife for Tommy John surgery.
This is definitely a blow to a sports base that really had something to be excited about this summer. They had Minnesota Twins tickets for the inaugural season at Target Field. The Twins added a left-handed slugger to take advantage of the hitter-friendly dimensions of the field. The front office also just showed a willingness to drop the small ball act after signing reigning AL MVP Joe Mauer to an eight-year, $184 million extension.
Now the Twins will likely have an even weaker bullpen as CBS Sports predicts lead reliever Matt Guerrier will be moved to the closer role. This move may be the final nail in the coffin for a team that once could have competed for the AL Central title in a very weak division.
Now the Central appears to be the Detroit Tigers, or the Chicago White Sox, if the players they signed jump in the Hot Tub Time Machine and go back five years.
