Where Is Amy Winehouse?s Place in Brit Soul Now That We Have Adele, Duffy and Florence and the Machi

Amy Winehouse’s passing marks the morbid perpetuation of the relationship between death, music and the age of 27. Jimi Hendrix died at the age of 27 after overdosing on particularly strong medication and a night of libations, Janis Joplin died at the age of 27 after overdosing on a combination of heroin and alcohol, and Jim Morrison died at the age of 27 after supposedly snorting heroin, which he believed to be cocaine. If there is some small solace, it is that drugs have not been identified as having any factor in her demise, as People.com reports.

However, the tour de force British singer will immediately best be remembered for her troubled years as an emerging artist, when she abused seemingly any and every kind of drug. After a few years, her career will be put into perspective and she will receive the respect she is due (not to say that people are ignoring her musical achievement now, but her trouble personal life comes to mind first).

As Abbey Goodman’s special commentary for CNN.com states, Winehouse paved the way for the new crop of British soul singers who are making a huge impact in the United States, reminding audiences blue-eyed soul does not have to a genre dominated by Disney television stars. One singer who comes to mind in particular is Adele. Her album 21 is breaking all kinds of sales records in the UK and her album has gone double platinum in the US, while Adele tickets for the North American leg of her Adele Live tour sold out almost immediately upon their release.

This would never have been possible without a singer as talented, as unapologetic, and, frankly, with a penchant for trouble as Amy Winehouse. Winehouse’s short recording career yielded two successful albums. Her debut, Frank, conquered Europe, and her second album Back to Black once again expanded the British musical empire across the Atlantic. There it found an audience awaiting her love of R&B and her impossibly powerful contralto vocals.

Though not as deep of a singer as Winehouse, Adele’s voice is equally as powerful and expressive. Adele is well aware of the trail Winehouse paved for her and other singers, including Duffy, Florence Welch, Estelle, and Eliza Doolittle.

“Amy is a true phenomenon,” Adele said in People. “When she was big in America, me and Duffy were blowing up in England, and I think it made the journey over a bit smoother.”

Amy Winehouse still remains the standard bearer for success as a musical transplant in the 21st century of Brit soul. The artist, the album Back in Black and the single “Rehab” won five of six nominations at the 2008 Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Adele’s album 21 appears well on its way to outsell the double-platinum Back in Black, which will likely increase its certification posthumously. She has yet to release a song as iconic as “Rehab” though. “Rolling in the Deep” may become her signature track, but that remains to be seen, since the 2011 Grammy nominations and awards have yet to be announced.

Looking forward, fans of Brit soul will likely be able to enjoy what was recorded for Winehouse’s third and untitled album. They will also get to enjoy years of musical offerings from Adele, Florence and company, as their paths to fame have been far less taxing on the body and the mind and much less likely to necessitate a toxicology report.

New Fragrance for Amy Winehouse??

A former “American Idol” contestant Alexis Cohen, known as the Glitter Girl, was killed in a hit and run accident on Saturday in New Jersey. She was just 25 years old. She auditioned for “American Idol” back in 2007 and tried again 2008. She did get an audition her first time but was completely turned away the second time. It is surprising she ever returned after the unkind words that Simon had to say of her performance. Not to mention the tirade she went on after she walked out of the audition. Let’s just say she was upset and didn’t have very nice things to say about Simon….there was even some cursing involved.  On a much happier subject, Angie Everhart welcomed her first child, a boy, on July 24th. New baby is Kayden Bobby, and Angie plans to raise him alone. In fact she has not shared any details about who the father might be.  Everhart is 39 and is best known for her swim suit appearances in Sports Illustrated and she has also hosted several reality TV shows. She has been in several films including “Another 9 ½ Weeks” and “Last Action Hero”.

Tomorrow night is the big “Bachelorette” finale on ABC…who will Jillian pick Ed or Kiptyn? As always ABC is egging us on with something. The most blank blank finale ever…yeah right. But you know I will be tuning in. Proposal…hmmm…I‘m not convinced, we will just have to see.
It is being reported that Amy Winehouse could earn $824,440 to launch a new perfume fragrance. That would be an interesting scent. When I think of her I pretty much think of cigarette smoke and B.O. – lovely scent that would make.  The reports are saying that perhaps the company that wants her is trying to capture her 50’s style. Is that what that style is? The perfume business is big for the star, so why shouldn’t Amy Winehouse get in on the act too. Some of those famous people in the perfume biz include, Beyonce, Jenifer Lopez, P. Diddy, and Britney Spears to name just a few.

Katie Holmes helped the Thursday night ratings for the FOX hit dance show…”So You Think You Can Dance?” After a lot of speculation Katie joined the show for its 100th episode and did a pre – taped tribute to Judy Garland. The show had an increase in viewership of 17% which means that about 8.4 million people tuned in for the show, the highest ever. In addition to performing for the show she also took the money she earned and donated it to Dizzy Feet Foundation which awards dance scholarships to underprivileged children. Katie’s performance received mixed reviews. IT probably won’t help or hurt her career and overall it was good just nothing spectacular. She looked great through and it would have been nice if it were live and if hubby Tom Cruise had been cheering her on in the audience.

A Trump Wedding

Tragedy strikes while setting up for Madonna’s “Sticky and Sweet” concert in Marseille France. While erecting the stage for Madonna’s performance it somehow collapsed and killed a 53 year old French man and injured six other people with two of those people receiving serious injuries. At this point it is unknown what exactly caused the accident. The show which was scheduled for this Sunday has been cancelled. Madonna released a statement, “I am devastated to have just received this tragic news. My prayers go out to those who were injured and their families along with my deepest sympathy to all those affected by this heartbreaking news.”

Good news and bad news for some couples. Starting with the good news….Donald Trump’s lovely daughter Ivanka got engaged last night to her boyfriend of two years, Jared Kushner.  Kushner also comes from a wealthy family and is also very ambitious like Ivanka. Jared comes from a Jewish family and Ivanka is taking the steps to convert to Judaism. Ivanka is 27 and Jared is 28 and the two are very happy. Ivanka sent out a twitter last night stating, “I got engaged last night…truly the happiest day of my life!!!” Now the bad news which I know will not come as a huge surprise. Amy Winehouse and her husband of two years have officially split and have been granted a divorce by a judge in London this morning. In the divorce papers Blake Fielder – Civil, Amy’s ex stated that “living with Winehouse was intolerable”. Once can only imagine from the glimpse into her life what that really means. Amy even admitted that she had an affair back in 2008. The woman is just a train wreck, so like I said divorce is always sad but in her case not a big surprise.

IT has just been announced that this year Farm Aid concert will be held on October 4th in St. Louis Missouri. This will be the first time that the concert will be held in St. Louis. Farm Aid started back in 1985 and has raised almost $35 million to help struggling farmers keep their land.   So far the lineup includes Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews and more performers will be announced in the coming weeks.

Caly Aiken Apologizes to Adam Lambert

Remember Mary Kay Letourneau (the teacher convicted of raping her 12 year old student and went to jail for 7 ½ years for the crime)? Well it really was true love, although it started out as a very disturbing story. Letourneau is now 47 (hard to believe) and her husband/student of 5 years, Vilii Fualaa, 26 are still together and happy. It is a crazy story but I have to admit I am happy for them. She did her time in prison, he waited, they have a couple of kids and through all this there are still together. The two are in the news this weekend because Mary Kay emceed the “Hot Teacher Night”,event and Vili was the DJ at the Fuel Sports Eats & Beats Bar, in Seattle.

I know this will not come as any big shocker, but Amy Winehouse has pulled out of yet another performance. This time she was supposed to perform at the 50th Birthday celebration of her record label Island on May 31st in London.  Her rep says she is not performing due to health problems. Refunds for the tickets are available. If you remember it was just 2 weeks ago that she had difficulty performing at a show in the Caribbean, not knowing the words, and just making a big mess of her whole performance. IT is just quite a sad story, such a talented, young woman who is just one hot mess! Pull yourself together Amy before it is just too late.

If you are a fan of the TV show “My Name is Earl”, staring, Jason Lee, this is your chance to help save it from cancellation. After 4 years on NBC the cast was notified of the decision to cancel the show. The cast admits not only were they upset by the decision but also caught by surprise. Well now they want to fight for their show but need the help of their fans. Although the NBC decision is final the show is trying to get FOX to pick it up but they need to let FOX know that the fans are there and will watch the show, so what better way to make your voice heard these days then through Twitter. You can go to the online petition @EarlTwition or even write to FOX and let them know why you like the show. Currently the online poll has 9,110 followers. NBC also cancelled the show “Medium” with Patricia Arquette after 5 seasons but CBS quickly picked that one up and it will air on Friday nights. So who knows what will happen with Earl, but you have to make your voice heard.

Clay Aiken, former “American Idol” runner up, really had people up in arms this week about a comment he made on his blog. After listening to Lambert sing “Ring of Fire” Aiken wrote… I” thought my ears would bleed. Contrived, awful and slightly frightening! I wasn’t really a fan and found myself surprised whenever folks told me they liked him”. Now Aiken is making nice and apologizing for his words to Lambert. In his latest statement he is saying “I obviously meant it as a colorful statement to imply that I did not enjoy what I heard. Any performer hopes that their music will appeal to all people, but no singer realistically expects it.  My opinion is just that, only my opinion, but for as much as some of the blogger’s seem to dislike me and care so little about my thoughts, they sure can waste a lot of their space on what I say.” Aiken does go on to say “The only person I would really dream of apologizing to is Adam. And the irony is, if he’s smart he couldn’t give a crap what I think. I do apologize to Adam for my colorful and negative choice of words. I hope he can forgive me. I imagine he doesn’t give a damn.” It keeps trying to sound like an apology but then not so sure. Anyway it is crazy how the bloggers wrap themselves up in something and won’t let it go. I think it is time though.

Eminem and Nick Cannon Fight

Eminem is back and he just can’t stop rapping about people in his new music. First it was Kim Kardashian Jessica Simpson, and Sarah Palin in “We Made You”. In his latest song, “Bagpipes from Baghdad” he sings about Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey and Cannon is NOT happy about it. Eminem and Carey did date briefly about 8 years ago and Cannon writes on his blog that Eminem “is still obsessed with my wife, the same female who wouldn’t let him get to second base from 8 years ago.” Then it really starts to get ugly when Cannon calls Eminem “racially insensitive” as well as an “old school Caucasian con man”. You really have to wonder what Eminem was thinking when he not only wrote the song but made it so everyone could hear it. It does seem to be a bit much and makes one think that he did step over the line and no wonder Nick Cannon is fuming over the song. There are definitely fighting words in that song. You be the judge, but it is very difficult to listen to and made me cringe. One might say take it with a grain of salt, it is Eminem after all, but it is pretty descriptive and to be quite honest pretty insulting. Sorry Mariah that out of nowhere you have to deal with this but lucky for you your hubby is willing to fight for your honor.

And speaking of back at it…Justin Timberlake was on SNL again this weekend and seriously the guy just needs to be regular, he is so funny. He did a follow up video with Andy Samberg to their “Dick in a Box” from last time for this show. This time a “lovely” video for Mother’s Day called “Motherlover”…oh sooo funny! The video also stars Susan Sarandon and Patricia Clarkson as the mothers and one might just say disrespectful and inappropriate, but its SNL so it works just fine.  Justin also does a skit where he jokes about Britney Spears and when they were dating. It was a funny show and Justin is just so talented. A not so funny performance happened for Amy Winehouse Friday night in St. Lucia, where she attempted to sing at the Jazz festival there. Oh Amy…what a train wreck…she forgot lyrics, lost her place and basically just stumbled through her song. You could almost feel her frustration as she threw up her arms at one point, and looked over at her dancers as if she had given up and couldn’t go on. Lucky for Amy (and the audience) there was a torrential storm that caused the rest of the show to be cancelled. Amy has been actually living in St. Lucia for the past several months and the concert was really her way to thank the locals for all their hospitality. Maybe just send them a thank you note next time.

Why does it seem that everywhere we look we see and hear from Kim Kardashian? Well the latest and greatest from the newly blond celeb is that she has revealed that step dad Bruce Jenner, has recently had a face lift. In fact this facelift was done to actually correct a partial facelift and a nose job that was botched that Bruce had done many years ago and had never been happy with the results. Now however he has had a doctor make the changes and fix the issues from the first time around and everyone, most especially Bruce, seems very happy with the results. In fact, Bruce who will turn 60 this year looks like he is in his 40’s. He looks great. The story actually was talked about and came up on the family’s reality show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” Yes, it is hard to keep those things private with camera crews in your home all the time. You can check out the show on E! and if you just can’t get enough of the Kardashian sisters, Khloe and Kourtney are getting their own reality show and are heading down to Miami to open their new Dash Boutique. You can catch the new show in August and I am sure sister Kim will be showing up for some visits.

Look Out Eminem is Making His Comeback

It’s time for another “comeback”, this time Eminem is hoping it is his turn. He has a new album coming out called “Relapse” and a new video that is not only funny but I have to admit pretty good and I am not the biggest Eminem fan around. The video, “We Made You” pretty much takes a shot at a lot of the celebs out there. Look alikes are used to spoof today’s hottest celebs like Kim Kardashian and her famous rear end,  Lindsay Lohan, Samantha Ronson, Amy Winehouse, Jessica Simpson and even a Sarah Palin look alike manages to make it into the video, and trust me she will be wishing she hadn’t. Kim Kardashian on the other hand thought the video was funny and was flattered to be a part of it. Dr. Dre produced the new album and even has a cameo in the video as Captain Kirk from Star Trek. It is definitely out there but worth the watch.

Here is a little more baby news for you for today. Campbell Brown of CNN and her husband welcomed their second son on Monday, Asher Liam who was a big boy weighing in at 9 lbs. 4 oz and 21.5 inches. Penelope Ann Miller also welcomed her second child Maria Adela. She is the couple’s second girl.  Penelope will be in a new movie with “High School Musical” cutie, Corbin Bleu. The two can be seen in the new family movie “Robosapien: Rebooted and Free Style.” Hopefully the movie is way better then its title! And there is more “Melrose Place” news to report. I feel like this is de ja vu…the newest old cast mate to join the show is Thomas Calabro, who placed Dr. Michael Mancini. I loved the show and am so happy to see all these familiar faces returning.  I bet they are so happy to be asked to play these famous roles again. I wonder if my favorite Jack Wagner will be back too. Why do they even need the new people, just bring back all the old ones.

Despite all that she has been through this week, Madonna comes to the aid of the Italian earth quake victims. Madonna grandparents on her father’s side actually lived in the town of Pacentro many many years ago. After hearing a plea from the Mayor asking for help for the town’s people, Madonna did not hesitate. She made a huge donation. Although the amount has not been released it is said to be around $500,000. Way to go Madonna! In other optimistic news, it seems that Farrah Fawcett who was recently admitted to the hospital for internal bleeding should be released in the next few days. IT is hard to believe that Farrah Fawcett is 62 and despite battling cancer still looks amazing. Her friend Alana Stewart says that Farrah is very brave and has a strong positive spirit. We love you Farrah…keep up the good fight!

Serious ski injury for Natasha Richardson

There is some sad news for Natasha Richardson. The actress was in a serious accident while skiing with friends and family on Monday in Canada. At this point there really isn’t much that is known except that her condition is very serious. Natasha was skiing and took a fall but nothing out of the ordinary at the time. She has been taking a beginners ski lesson and she fell. “She didn’t hit anyone or anything” and it seemed to be a pretty typical fall.  She even seemed ok after the fall. She walked away and was talking. Approximately an hour later though, she started complaining of headaches and she was immediately taken to a hospital in Montreal. From there she was transferred to a hospital in New York City where she was met by her husband Liam Neeson, and her mother Vanessa Redgrave. IT was said at the time of her lesson she was not wearing a helmet. We will just have to wait for more news.  For the sake of her family and her two children I do hope she will be just fine.

In music news the Counting Crows have split with their record label of 18 years. The band wants to do things right now that their current label will not allow them do to. The band had worked with Geffen Records for all these years and is grateful for the times they shared. Things have changed though over the years and right now the band wants to focus on the opportunities that the internet can provide for them. They are very excited about what they may be able to do and also very thankful to the people of Geffen who have helped make them be so successful. One of the first things they are going to do as a “gift” to their fans is that they are going to offer a free download this week only of their song “Borderline”. You can go to their official website for the download. Awfully nice way to start thing out on your own boys.

Here is an update on our 2 favorite bad girls, Amy Winehouse and Lindsay Lohan. First off, good news for Lindsay .After hearing from Lindsay’s lawyer about how well she has been doing on probation as well as showing proof the judge removed her arrest warrant. Lindsay’s’ lawyer said it was all just a misunderstanding. Amy Winehouse was also back in court today in regards to an alleged assault in London back in September 2008. At the hearing Amy plead not guilty and a trial date has been set for July 23, 2009. Ok ladies behave yourselves and try to stay out of any more trouble.
