As a mark of respect for rock icon Jimi Hendrix, these tribute concerts were first performed in the 1990s and have grown into regular concert tours. Founded by the late great guitarist’s father, to continue his son’s legacy of supreme rock guitar playing, the 8th year of the ‘Experience Hendrix’ Concert Tour has a terrific line-up for 2014.
Among the superb musicians in the show is bass player Billy Cox, from the Hendrix Experience band and Gypsys. After meeting in the Army they remained friends. After Jimi’s untimely death, Billy hooked up with Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell, playing in Gypsy Sun Experience.
Buddy Guy, the veteran Blues man, who was much revered by Jimi himself, will also be performing. A legend in his own right, he has played with – and inspired – equally legendary figures such as Otis Redding and Carlos Santana. Both Billy and Buddy have, like other musicians in this show, been inducted into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame.
Also on the bill are Zakk Wylde, once lead guitarist with Ozzy Osbourne, who continues to wow fans with his recordings on guitar and keyboard. Jonny Lang, who has an impressive touring record with the likes of the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Jeff Beck and Sting, will also be making his unique contribution to the program. Then there’s Bootsy Collins, veteran of George Clinton and P-Funk, who performed on the album ‘Power of Soul: A Hendrix tribute album. Dweezil Zappa, currently touring in a tribute band to his father Frank, is yet another brilliant guitarist in the Experience Hendrix line-up. A powerful female presence is provided by Ana Popovic, a popular singer and guitarist who has shared festival stages with many other players in this concert.
All these, and other top musicians, will be meeting on stage to celebrate the music of Hendrix in their own inimitable style, from next Spring onward.
