Leaves' Eyes is a Gothic metal band with folk metal elements from Norway/Germany assembled in 2003, shortly before the then Theater of Tragedy singer Liv Kristine was fired from the band. Leaves' Eyes was formed by her husband Alexander Krull and members of his band Atrocity. The band combines atmospheric, metal and classical elements. The vocals of Liv Kristine are occasionally backed up by death grunts from her husband Alexander Krull, but most of the time Liv Kristine sings alone.
Their debut album, Lovelorn, was released in 2004. The second album, Vinland Saga, was released 30th of May 2005, and retells the tale of the discovery of Vinland, alias the continent of North America, by Leif Erikson. The EP Legend Land was released on June 2nd, 2006 as a followup to Vinland Saga.
The band name was created by Liv Kristine, as a homophone for her first name. "Leaves" is connected to nature, which has always been the biggest inspiration for her. Liv Kristine writes all of the lyrics for the band. Leaves' Eyes are currently working on their first DVD, to be released in December 2006. Even before the band named themselves as Blind Guardian, they had already released two demos under the name Lucifer's Heritage in 1985 and 1986.
From the beginning, Blind Guardian have been inspired by the fictional worlds of J. R. R. Tolkien and other fantasy authors, like Michael Moorcock, as well as traditional legends and epics. Over the years, a running theme has developed associating the band members with traveling bards.
Blind Guardian's first two albums, Battalions of Fear and Follow the Blind, were much more in the style of speed metal than their following works. Beginning with their third album Tales from the Twilight World, Blind Guardian gradually turned to a more sophisticated sound, including vast use of choirs and sometimes orchestral arrangements. It is a story marked by powerful riffs, melody and string arrangements, which represent a colorful bandwidth of musical styles, truly adequate to the very concept of the album itself and never concealing the Nordic origins of the singer. "I found my inspiration for many of the pieces in the Norwegian art and folk music, as well as in Celtic melodies," explains Liv Kristine. She knew from the very beginning that a special approach was needed for such an ambitious musical enterprise: "I absolutely wanted to work with actual classical instruments for Vinland Saga to do this great story justice."
Classic rock compositions ensnared in strings and kettledrums, loving flowing harmonies, and hammering metal arrangements, can all be found on Vinland Saga. In the midst of it all stands Liv Kristine with her unique vocals, made recognizable from her past work with Theater of Tragedy, skillfully navigating through the story. The will to create something great in a musical sense does not take a back seat in the ubiquitous epic Vinland Saga. "In comparison to the debut Lovelorn (2004), the harmonies of the guitars, violins and chellos are notably more complex," explains Liv and adds that the recordings took approximately twice as much time to complete: "The mood of both albums is very comparable however. Vinland Saga is a further development of Lovelorn where both sides of the band's music were upgraded – the hard parts are now harder and the sentimental parts are more sentimental."
