Blackalicious was formed in the 1990s when Gift of Gab and Chief Xcel met in high school and began to jam and bust thymes together. Their very first recording was called 'Swan Lake' and was released by Solesides Records that consisted of a few friends of the Blackalicious crew, namely Lateef the Truth Speaker, DJ Shadow and Lyrics Born. 'Swan Lake' was a massive underground hit but it would be a while before Blackalicious would taste success outside the underground scene.
Solesides was soon rechristened Quannum Projects and in 2000, Blackalicious released their very first full-length studio album called Nia. The album was a huge success and garnered so much critical acclaim that the duo were immediately signed onto MCA records, after which they recorded the album Blazing Arrow in 2002, which was an even bigger hit than Nia.
