The band was formed in 1974 and has undergone a series of line up changes since its conception. It originally consisted of Derrick Simpson, Garth Dennis and Don Carlos. The trio was raised in the Waterhouse area of Kingston, which has consistently churned out some of the best reggae musicians in the world. The trio came together to make music under the name Black Uhuru, Uhuru being the Swahili word for freedom. After a few years, Carlos departed to pursue a solo career and Dennis left to join the Wailing Souls. Simpson decided to pursue Black Uhuru and roped in Michael Rose, Errol Nelson and vocalist Sandra Jones to complete the line up. It was this Black Uhuru line up that would make the band's most successful albums, earning them the Grammy for best Reggae band in 1985 when the category was first instigated.

However Rose would soon leave to pursue his own solo career and Jones would leave as well, later passing away due to breast cancer. The remaining members became engaged in a legal dispute over the use of the band name. Recently, Black Uhuru was resurrected as Black Uhuru Featuring Michael Rose and has begun touring and recording with a new line up. An album is slated for release in the near future.
