From 1967 till 1976, Kirchen sand and also played on 10 Commander Cody albums. In 1972, they released Hot Rod Lincoln and it was such a hit that it reached into the Top Ten nationwide. He then conducted as many as 10 tours. He then went on to to form The Moonlighters. They recorded two albums that received mixed reviews. Nick Lowe utilized Kirchen in his albums- Party of One released in the year 1991 and The Impossible Bird released in the year 1994. When Nick conducted his tour, in 1995, for his album The Impossible birds he took Kirchen with him.

In 1986, when Kirchen moved to the Washington DC, he formed his band Too Much Fun, that has Johnny Castle as the bassist and Jack O'Dell as the drummer. The band became famous and won 10 Washington Area Music Awards, including Musician and Songwriter in the year 1996. In 1997 Kirchen won the Musician as well as the Artist of the Year and in 1998 won a five awards again in Washington Area Music Awards. Inaddition to it, Kirchen and his band Too Much Fun also won Roots Rock Album, for the song Raise A Ruckus and also Instrumentalist of the Year at the Washington Area Music Awards in 1999.
When he released his third album High Tone Records, the song Tied to the Wheel, it was highly acclaimed. The album is a perfect mixture of great covers and fascinating originals that is powered by his amazing sense of music. He then released his next album Tied to the Wheel and this album too highly claimed.
In January 2001, he was invited to perform at the 25th reunion radio show of Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen on the widely syndicated Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion. In 2002, he did some international touring. He went to the Blue Highways Festival in Utrecht Holland with the Twangbangers in 2002 and with Austin deLone in 2005, the Country Rendez-Vous Festival with Too Much Fun, in France, the Byron Bay Blues Festival in Australia with The Paladins and, back in the USA,The Philadelphia Folk Festival where Bill single-handedly enchanted the audience with his solo semi-acoustic set. He has also conducted a tour with The Hacienda Brothers and was also invited to play at the National Folk Festival, in Lowell MA. Back by popular demand, in early June of 2005, Kirchen again visited Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Ranch Guitar Camp as a guitar instructor as well as performer. Kirchen is interviewed and also performs along with Hank Thompson, Doug Sahm, Don Walser and many more. He was a keynote speaker in 1998 at the International Conference on Elvis Presley in Memphis. He is regarded by many as a culmination of the elegant and funky and also a sensational musician with enormous depth.
