They were officially christened Bill Haley and his Comets in 1952 and things began going crazy the following year with a single called 'Crazy Man Crazy' and then the following year with 'Rock Around the Clock', a song that would mark a cultural shift in America at that time. This was followed by another huge hit 'Shake, Rattle and Roll' which became the first ever international rock-n-roll hit.
The band lost some of their mainstream appeal when the wilder, sexier likes of Elvis and Little Richard began hitting the stages but Bill Haley and his Comets were still extremely popular abroad- they were the first American rock-n-roll band to tour England, an event that caused the sensational Second Battle of Waterloo. They were also the first American rock act to tour the world. The band continued to play as an oldies act from the sixties onwards- Haley would perform in front of the Queen and circle the world again before passing away in 1981.
