Although Frisell was born in Baltimore, Maryland, he was brought up in the Denver Colorado. Since he was inclined to music when he was young, he went on to learn music in the University of Northern Colorado. Dale Bruning was his music teacher and had also released album together. He then went on to study at the Berklee School of Music. His major break came when he was recommended to Manfred Eicher of ECM Records by Pat Metheny. In 1981, he displayed his guitar skills on Jan Garbarek's Prints. His first solo release was In Line. He continued to be an active participant in the music scene and also recorded with many others. In the 90's, he released two albums- Have a Little Faith and This Land. Have a Little Faith is actually a compilation of all the music of Charles Ives, Aaron Copland, Bob Dylan, Madonna and many other famous musicians. He has also contributed in the soundtracks of the silent films of Buster Keaton and also contributed to Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto's album Heartbeat. He has also acted as the musical director for Century of Song, from 2003 and 2005, that is a chain of exclusive concerts at the German arts festival Ruhr Triennale. He invited many international songwriters to perform their favorite songs but in new arrangements decided by him. The concert was a huge success and was labeled by the press as a "Century Event". He has also performed in the movies too and also worked with Brian Eno and Bono on the soundtrack for Million Dollar Hotel, starring Mel Gibson.
