Betti Xiang
Xiang, from Shanghai, learned erhu from her father, Xiang Zuying, a celebrated erhu master, soloist with the Shanghai National Orchestra and professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In 1981 she gave her first public performance as an erhu soloist with the Shanghai National Orchestra's tour of France, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan and debuted works by distinguished Chinese composers Zhu Jianer, Jin Fuzai, and Lu Pei. In 1986 she was honored with the popular Young Artists Award for an outstanding solo artist in both Shanghai and Beijing. In the past two decades Xiang has premiered works by such distinguished musicians like Bruce Saylor, Conrad Tao, Huang Ruo, Victoria Bond, Patricia Morehead, Bright Sheng and Tan Dun. In July 2006 Xiang performed with an album of her late father's music ‘Tunes of Countryside'. She performed with the Albany Symphony Orchestra and enthralled her fans. Betti Xiang is the popular erhu maestro who after creating waves in China has been enthralling audiences throughout the United States since 1996. She has delighted audiences at popular venues such as the Ravinia International Music Festival, Lincoln Center and the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, the Smithsonian Institute and on National Public Radio and Chicago's WFMT. Xiang is also part of the popular Silk Road Ensemble and has worked in partnership with the Amelia Piano Trio, the Lincoln String Quartet, the Newberry Consort early music ensemble and the Cube Contemporary Chamber Ensemble. In 2005 she took the breath away of her fans with Tan Dun's erhu concerto ‘Crouching Tiger' at the inauguration of Chicago's Millennium Park. A year later she captivated her fans with ‘The Butterfly Lovers' that she had performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the baton of David Alan Miller.
