Betti Xiang
Xiang, from Shanghai, learned erhu from her father, Xiang Zuying, a celebrated erhu master, soloist with the Shanghai National Orchestra and professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In 1981 she gave her first public performance as an erhu soloist with the Shanghai National Orchestra's tour of France, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan and debuted works by distinguished Chinese composers Zhu Jianer, Jin Fuzai, and Lu Pei. In 1986 she was honored with the popular Young Artists Award for an outstanding solo artist in both Shanghai and Beijing. In the past two decades Xiang has premiered works by such distinguished musicians like Bruce Saylor, Conrad Tao, Huang Ruo, Victoria Bond, Patricia Morehead, Bright Sheng and Tan Dun. In July 2006 Xiang performed with an album of her late father's music ‘Tunes of Countryside'. She performed with the Albany Symphony Orchestra and enthralled her fans. She also performed ‘The Butterfly Lovers' once again with the renowned Conductor David Alan Miller
