‘Bethel’ is the fastest-growing city in the Sullivan County, New York, the USA. This city had its global recognition when it became an unintended host of the original 1969.

The first settlers of this city inhabited here around 1795 near the present communities of Bethel and White Lake. This city was officially established in 1809 from the town of Lumberland. Tourism industry grew here in the 19th Century. It became home to many hotels that were the part of Borscht Belt and sleep away camps of 20th century. This town was brought to worldwide attention in 1969 when nearly 400,000 masses gathered at Yasgur's Farm for 3 days of Peace and Music.

According to the US Census Bureau, this town has a total area of 90.0 square miles, of which, 85.4 square miles is land and 4.6 square miles is water. The most refined feature of Bethel is its access to several lakes – all within a five minute drive of each other. These lakes are White Lake, Kauneonga Lake, Silver Lake and Lake Superior.

According to the 2000 census, population of Bethel is 4,362. It has 1,649 households and 1,101 families. Its population density is 51.1 people per square mile and it has 3,641 housing units at an average density of 42.6/sq mi. Its racial makeup is 90.35% Caucasians, 11.28% Latin Americans, 4.61% African Americans, 0.18% Native Americans, 0.50% Asian Americans, 0.16% Pacific Islander Americans, 2.80% from other races and 1.40% from two or more races.

The sex ratio of this city is for every 100 females there are 108.4 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and above, there are 107.9 males.

Bethel is primarily a rural area with the characteristics of a city. This city is situated in the heart of old Borscht Belt Catskills resort area. Many old bungalow colonies still exist there, which caters to the Orthodox Jewish clientele during the summer season. Most of those old resorts had their heyday from 1930 to early 1970. But most of them have been closed since long.
