Berwyn ‘Berwyn’ city co-exists with the Berwyn Township in the Cook County, Illinois, the USA. This city was formed in 1901 as a break off of the Cicero Township. This town celebrates its 100th Anniversary in 2008.

It emerged as a fastest growing suburb. It has stringent building codes and proper blocks. Most buildings have stained glass windows, clay tile roofs, terra cottas and intricate brick patterns. Today, Berwyn has emerged as a city with significant collection of Chicago-style bungalows.

A rail line was opened in Berwyn in 1864. When the railway authorities refused to build a station here, its inhabitants took an initiative and constructed LaVergne Railway Station in 1874. LaVergne station boosted the morale of Piper and Andrews who were longing for a railroad to be built here. They chose the name ‘Berwyn.’ Sooner the entire area became Berwyn.

Both Piper and Andrews played crucial role in developing the southern portion of the present-day Berwyn. John Kelly reshaped its northern part consisting of 12th to the 16th Streets. The 16th and 31st Streets were not settled in those days. They were two paths for transportation. Even today those paths are famous as Oak Park Avenue and Ridgeland Avenue. Berwyn officially became a city in 1908 but still it was not until 1920 due to its underdeveloped middle portion.

Berwyn became a fastest growing suburb. It has developed so much that today it has the most significant collection of Chicago-style bungalows. According to the US Census Bureau, this city has a total area of 10.1 km², all of which is the land area. Its total population is 54,016. It has 19,702 households and 12,924 families with the population density of 5,361.4/km². The city has 20,691 housing units.

The racial makeup of Berwyn is 73.44% Whites, 1.30% African Americans, 0.44% Native Americans, 2.59% Asians, 0.03% Pacific Islanders, 18.59% miscellaneous and 3.62% from two or more races. Its Hispanic race is 38.03% of the population with 31.0% Mexican Americans. The top five non-Hispanic ancestries of Berwyn are 12.0% Polish, 11.8% German, 11.1% Irish, 10.4% Italian and 6.8% Czech.
