Bernard Jeffrey McCollough was born in Chicago in 1958. His neighbourhood was rougher than most other and his large family lived under one roof. He worked at the Regal Theatre and was a performer in the Chicago parks in his younger days. At the age of 19, in 1977 he put on his shoes of a professional comedian. He was the winner of Comedy Search called Miller Lite in 1990, which paved the way for a successful career as a comedian. His popularity went on an overdrive when he opened for Redd Foxx, Dionne Warwick, and Natalie Cole along with a number of comedy specials on HBO.

He began his career in film with a variety of minor roles including Mo'Money (1992), who's the Man, and House Party 3. His big break came in the Ice Cube film, Friday where he played Pastor Clever. Following this film he worked in many other movies and serials like How to Be a Player, Booty Call, and Life among others. He is also somebody who has broken out of the traditional Black Comedy' genre and has performed a myriad of different characters in movies like Ocean's Eleven and Charlie's Angels : Full Throttle. But, once a standup always a standup; and following this maxim Mac returned to his stand-up comedy roots and toured the country as one of the Kings of Comedy in 1997. Along with greats like Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, and Cedric the Entertainer, the comedy act was filmed by Spike Lee for this movie The Original Kings of Comedy.
Bernie Mac Got his own sitcom The Bernie Mac Show in 2001 with help from Fox. Th show is based on his own life and is about all hell breading loosed when he become the custodian over his sisters three children.
