‘Bend’ is the largest city in Deschutes County in Central Oregon, the USA. It is a county seat of Deschutes and the principal city of Bend, Oregon Metropolitan Statistical Area.

This city is located on the eastern edge of Cascade Range along the Deschutes River. It was originally a crossing point on the river that began settlement in the early 1900s that was finally incorporated as a city in 1905. It became a gateway for many outdoor sports including mountain biking, fishing, hiking, camping, rock climbing, white-water rafting, skiing and golf.

This city derives its name from ‘Farewell Bend,’ used by the early pioneers to refer to the location along the Deschutes River. Bend was exposed to the Native Americans only for at least 12,000 years until 1824. It didn’t have any European American settlement until 1900. Alexander M. Drake founded Pilot Butte Development Company here. By 1904, a small community had developed around the area within Bend. The city was incorporated by a general vote of 300 residents. It incorporated its municipality on January 4, 1905 and appointed A. H. Goodwillie as its founfing mayor.

It was originally Farewell Bend that was later shortened to Bend. It has the distinction of being the only city in continental U.S. besides Portland, Oregon, to have an extinct volcano within the city limits. According to 2000 census, it has 52,029 inhabitants, 21,062 households and 13,395 families. Its population density is 1,624.8 people per square mile. It has 22,507 housing units at an average density of 702.9/sq mi. Its total area of 32.2 square miles has 32.0 square miles of land and 0.2 square miles water.

The racial makeup of Bend is 93.98% Whites, 0.28% African Americans, 0.79% Native Americans, 1.00% Asians, 0.08% Pacific Islanders, 1.75% from miscellaneous races and 2.12% from two or more races. Its Hispanics or Latinos race is 4.61% of the total population. The sex ratio of this city is for every 100 females, there are 97.1 males. It has 95.6 males for every 100 females aged 18 and above.
