Famous as a brilliant actor and singer, Ben Vereen is a multi-talented personality. He was born on October 10, 1946 in Laurinburg, North Carolina. Beside acting and singing, he is also a skilled in dancing. Ben has performed in numerous Broadway theater shows. He also received nomination for a Tony Award for Jesus Christ Superstar in 1972. He received a Tony Award for his outstnding acting in Pippin in 1973. Vereen starred in the Broadway musical "Wicked as the Wizard of Oz" where he filled in the place of former Wizard George Hearn on May 31, 2005. Later on April 4, 2006, Vereen was replaced by tour Wizard David Garrison.

Vereen has attained a special place in theater world by numerous appearances on various television programs and films. Few of his highlighted film roles include song-and-dance men in "Funny Lady" and "All That Jazz". He also acted in the famous television series "Tenspeed and Brown Shoe". But Vereen is well known for his role as "Chicken" George Murray in "Roots" as well as also remebered for his memorable role of Commander Edward M. La Forge, father of Geordi La Forge, on Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1993. Many of his other notable TV appearances include "Oz", "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air", "The Jamie Foxx Show", "The Love Boat", "The Muppet Show", "The Nanny", " Touched by an Angel", "Webster", "Zoobilee Zoo". Additionally, he has also acted in several one-man shows where he actively lectures on black history and numerous inspirational topics.

Unforunately, Vereen met an accident in 1992 while walking on the Pacific Coast Highway by a car driven by producer/composer David Foster.

Fayetteville Observer of April 29, 2006 says that Vereen came to know that he was adopted while applying for a passport in the late 1960s. His birth name was found as Benjamin Augustus Middleton as revealed by his birth certificate. It was learned that he was the son of Essie Middleton, and that he was born in Laurinburg, North Carolina. In April of 2006, Vereen Came to know his mother's name when he visited Laurinburg with a genealogist. His mother's name was Essie May Pearson, and she had died 24 years before. According to his mother's knowns, she had gone on a trip when Ben was a child. He had left her baby in someone's care. When she returned, she couldn't find her baby. He met his mother's daughter, Gloria Walker, his sister, of New Haven, Connecticut in May of 2006. He also has other siblings from his mother. One more interesting thing is that Vereen was born on exactly the same day as actor Charles Dance.

Ben Vereen's unusual ability to blend infrequent talent with a strong sense of social consciousness has enabled him to take on thundering musical, comedic and dramatic roles with great finesse and excellence. He is the first person to receive three of these AGVA awards in one year.
