Ben Folds Five
A guitar less band may seem strange at first, but the piano, bass and drums trio Ben Folds Five have dispelled any misgivings about their ability to rock as loud and hard as the next band. Calling themselves "punk rock for sissys," the band have been grouped with the nerd rock movement of the mid-90s with one exception, Folds know how to write catchy and clever pop songs that hold up after repeated listens.
With the musical sensibility of Eric Carmen, the punk rock attitude of a friendlier Johnny Rotten and the piano skills of Elton John, Ben Folds is on the brink of great things as a pop performer. Aside from his unusual role models, Folds has splashed in a big way onto the alternative scene with a rollicking brand of piano-based, guitar-less pop that is fast finding a receptive audience.
The story begins in North Carolina, where Folds was a budding, classically trained drummer. Frustration and elitism in the music department of his school led him to ditch his drums in a nearby pond, drop out and pick up piano. After dropping out of the music department of still another school because they misread his considerable skills and started him in remedial piano, Folds became an English major. At the same time, his pop career took off, with sold-out local gigs and record industry buzzards flying around waving contracts. He dropped out of school one semester short of his degree to pursue his band full-time.

Artist Biography - Ben Folds Five
|
Ben Folds Five (1994–2000) was a three member band formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. They played what might be called piano-dominated pop/rock. Much of their work was influenced by jazz, evident in frequent improvised passages through bridge and/or ending. Members of the band were Ben Folds, who was the lead singer, played the keyboard/piano and wrote most of the songs; Robert Sledge on bass and Darren Jessee on drums. After the band's amicable breakup, Folds began a solo career. Robert Sledge is currently playing in the band International Orange, and Darren Jessee is the front man for the band Hotel Lights.
When asked for the reason for the band's confusing name, Folds said that it "sounds better than Ben Folds Three"
