The rapidly growing city of Washington, ‘Bellevue’ is located in King County. Situated across Lake Washington from Seattle, this city was earlier famous as a satellite city. It has been categorized as an edge city that is also famous as boomburb. The 2003 census Bureau estimates that it had 112,344 inhabitants that made it the fifth largest city of the USA and largest on the Eastside of King County.
William Meydenbauer founded Bellevue in 1869. But it was officially incorporated on March 21, 1953. It was a rural area with little development prior to the opening of Lake Washington Floating Bridge in 1940. Its downtown underwent rapid change and become a second major city center in Washington. Its name has been derived from a French term for ‘beautiful view.’ This city is bordered by the cities of Kirkland in north and Redmond to northeast alongside Overlake and Crossroads neighborhoods.
An interesting aspect of this city is that nearly a third of its residents are foreign-born. 32% of them are nonwhite and a big chunk of them originate from China, India, Russia and Mexico. This city attracts business, technology, manual labour jobs, quality schools and parks. It has emerged as a city of largest and most affluent Asian population.
Bellevue is the 15th wealthiest communities in Washington. This city has a total area of 33.9 square miles, of which 30.8 square miles is land and 3.2 square miles is water. According to 2000 census, it has 112,344 inhabitants, 45,836 households and 29,060 families residing in the city circles. Its population density is 3,563.6 people per square mile. It has 48,396 housing units at an average density of 1,574.0/sq mi. Its racial makeup is 74.33% Whites, 1.99% African Americans, 0.32% Native Americans, 17.39% Asians, 0.23% Pacific Islanders, 2.54% from miscellaneous races and 3.19% from two or more races. Its Hispanic race is 5.32% of the total population.
The sex ratio of this city is for every 100 females there are 98.4 males, whereas there are 96.6 males for every 100 females aged 18 and above.
