The township of ‘Belleville’ is located in Essex County, New Jersey, the USA. It was created from portions of Bloomfield by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 8, 1839. Some of its areas were taken to create Woodside and Franklin Townships.

Belleville became an independent municipality on March 27, 1874. The municipality was, though, dissolved on February 22, 1876. But it was reincorporated as a town on November 16, 1910. It adopted its current township form of government in 1981. The city is ruled under Faulkner Act form of New Jersey municipal government by a seven-member Township Council. Two of the council members are elected at-large. One of them is elected mayor and one each from four wards is members elected to serve four-year terms.

It is the eighth Congressional District of 28th Legislative District of New Jersey. According to 2000 Census, this city has 35,928 inhabitants. It accommodates 13,731 households and 9,089 families. It has a total area of 3.4 square miles, of which 3.3 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water. Its population density is 10,744.3 people per square mile. It has 14,144 housing units at an average density of 4,229.8/sq mi. Its racial makeup is 69.44% Whites, 5.36% African Americans, 0.17% Native Americans, 11.31% Asians, 0.07% Pacific Islanders, 9.83% from miscellaneous races and 3.82% from two or more races. Its Hispanic race is 23.68% of the total population.

The census reports further notes its most common ancestries inhabiting the township as Italians at 30.9%, Irish at 9.4%, Germans at 6.9%, Polish at 4.5%, United States at 2.6% and English at 2.2%. Out of 13,731 households, 29.5% has children under the age of 18 residing in family set ups, 47.0% are married couples living together, 13.9% has a female householder minus husband and 33.8% are non-families. 27.9% of the entire households are made up of individuals and 9.1% has someone living alone.

The sex ratio of this township is for every 100 females there are 93.2 males and 89.8 males for every 100 females aged 18 and above.
