Bell Biv DeVoe, was part of New Edition, but they broke away from it after completing the tour in support of Heart Break. Ricky "Slick" Bell, Michael "Biv" Bivins and Ronnie "R.D." DeVoe makeup the Bell Biv DeVoe band. Three of them decided to break away after the suggestion of producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Their first album Poison was produced by many people Jam and Lewis, Wolf & Epic (Richard Wolf & Bret "Epic" Mazur), Guy's Timmy Gatling, and Public Enemy's Hank Shocklee and Keith Shocklee. BBDwere a pioneer of sorts, they successfully combined hip-hop with R&B & pop. The title track of their CD released in 1990 became a #1 hit on the R&B chart. Do Me!", "B.B.D. (I Thought It Was Me)?", "When Will I See You Smile Again", and "Dope!" were their singles which became hit. Their first album itself sold three million copies. Their remix album W.B.B.D.BootCity:The Remixe and the single "Word To The Mutha!" was certified gold.
Their popularity was soaring high,as a result they were invited to perform on the 1990 American Music Awards and other such ceremonies. Their second album Hootie Mack released in 1993 with singles like "Gangsta", "Above The Rim", "Something In Your Eyes" and "Show Me the Way".
New Edition united in 1996 and Bell, Bivins, and DeVoe toured to promote the CD Home Again on the MCA record label.
