This grand event would also be an opportunity for the People's Republic of China to showcase the economic development and the new recognition that China has gained as an upcoming world power in the past few years.
As far as the venues for the games are concerned there have been 31 venues that have been considered, and the construction of many new stadia began in the mid of the year 2007 itself.
Some of PRC's already extant large and historical stadia would be used as training centers, the prominent ones are: Beijing National Stadium, Beijing National Indoor Stadium, Beijing National Aquatics Centre, Olympic Green Convention Centre, Olympic Green, and Beijing Wukesong Culture & Sports Center.
The prime venue for the games would be the Beijing National Stadium, the stadium has also earned a moniker “Bird Nest.”
The moniker follows from the shape of the stadium which has a semblance of a bird's nest.
The stadium is a fairly new one as the construction for it was started in the year 2003.
It is a massive stadium and has a seating capacity of 80,000. This prime venue would host both the opening as well as the closing ceremony for the grand event, apart from the final game for football (soccer).
The emblem of the games has been titled as “Dancing Beijing.” The emblem signifies the building blocks of the Chinese society and culture, the emblem is a red seal and the word 'jing' -- which means the national capital -- has been symbolized calligraphically on it.
The symbol also signifies an invitation to China as can be construed from the open arms of the figure.
The main events to be held during the games are archery, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing,canoeing, cycling, diving,
equestrian, fencing, field hockey, football, gymnastics, handball, judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting,
softball, swimming, synchronized swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, volleyball, water polo, weightlifting
and wrestling.
