Formed in fall of 1980s, the Beautiful South is an influential English pop group which was founded by the group effort of the remaining members of the Hull group The Housemartins. The founding members included the lead singer, Paul Heaton, and drummer, Dave Hemingway. Later the band added the new members Sean Welch on Bass, Dave Stead on Drums and Dave Rotheray on Guitar. Rotheray is also a song writer who writes along with Heaton. Though Heaton stayed as a lead singer but later Hemingway and female singer Briana Corrigan joined the band. And together they created a trio of lead vocalists.
He music of the band is bubbly, tricky, lightweight pop which is always backed wonderfully by Heaton's sour, vicious and amusing music. The band has gained huge reputation among the local clubs and pubs. The band released its first album "Welcome to the Beautiful South" in 1989 which spawned the hits like "Song For Whoever" and "You Keep It All In". They got their only No. 1 hit to date that is "Choke" album song in 1990 , "A Little Time" followed by another hit "Old Red Eyes Is Back" in 1992. In 1994, when Corrigan left the band, Jacqui Abbott, was brought on board to fill in her space. She was discovered by Heaton at an after show party in St Helens.

The first track "Manchester" of the album begins as a poem - "If rain makes Britain great, then Manchester is greater" – 'a sodden tribute' to the city in which he now lives, says Heaton. The tracks cover love and loss and all that happens in-between …". So many pop songs are written about 15-20 year olds. We've never really targeted them, or newly weds. We write about people who've lived together most of their lives."
