A young studio guitarist by the name of Scotty Morris was frustrated with his situation. He was helping others create music without making his own. In 1989, he decided to change that by creating a three piece band that would blend jazz, swing, and blues. The other members in this trio were Kurt Sodergren on drums and Dirk Shumaker on bass. After a few years of local gigs, the band decided it was time to full out their sound. Four more members joined the band and in 1992, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy was formed. The other musicians were Andy Rowley on saxophone, Glen Marhevka on trumpet, Karl Hunter on sax and clarinet, and Joshua Levy on piano. How did they get such a strange name? Scotty says it was "handed down" to him from blues legend Albert Collins. Scott was at a concert of Albert's when he got a poster autographed. Albert signed it "To Scotty, the Big Bad Voodoo Daddy". He thought that was the best name for a band he'd ever heard, so when it came time to come up with one for the band, there was no other choice.

Artist Biography - Bbvd
|
The band was an immediate success with the Los Angeles swing scene, but that wasn't enough for the group. They began a rigorous touring schedule to spread their talents through the country. Despite playing over 200 shows a year, the band's popularity was not on the national level. That all changed in 1996, as they appeared in the film "Swingers" and their signature song "You and Me and The Bottle Makes Three Tonight" appeared on its soundtrack. This prompted the band to release two independent albums before their major label release "Big Bad Voodoo Daddy" in 1998. Even more touring followed for the band in support of the record. Successful shows and tours by BBVD kept their drive and focus, but they still felt something was missing. The band felt that they had hit a wall. They felt as if they had seen every corner of the U.S. 12 times over. A European tour proved to be the answer. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy could play shows overseas without the expectations or preconceived ideas of who they were or what type of music they played. It was refreshing to say the least. The band was rejuvenated. With a new perspective and energy, the band was ready for a new album. Ideas formulated, but inspiration didn't come until the band played the Jazz Fest in New Orleans. Scotty was inspired by the variety of musicians and the quality with which they played. Shortly after he showed the other members of the band some new songs, and they were instantly enthusiastic. The band rented out an abandoned card club to write and record their new album "Save My Soul". The band felt it was their best effort by far. According to them, you can really feel the New Orleans atmosphere in the music. Since the strongly inspired came out in 2003, the band has put out two more albums, both in 2004. "Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Live" was released just before "Everything You Want for Christmas".
