‘Baytown’ city is located in the Gulf Coast region of Texas State in the Chambers and Harris Counties. It is situated along the State Highway 146 and Interstate 10 within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area.
The city was settled in early 1822. Nathaniel Lynch was one of its earliest residents, who had set up a ferry that used to cross the junction of San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou. The ferry service that he had started is now famous as Lynchburg Ferry. This city was earlier a combination of three separate towns. Goose Creek was the first of them named after bayou. Its establishment dates back to before 1850. It was followed by rival communities of Pelly in the late 1910 and East Baytown in the early 1920.
The merging process of these cities began after World War I. Interestingly Baytown community opposed to that idea. But they were merged in one in 1947 when all three agreed to consolidate. Its citizens settled on the name Baytown for a new combined city. The present day Baytown was officially founded on January 24, 1948.
Major motorsports complex, Houston Raceway Park was opened here in 1988. It features National Hot Rod Association race and a robust weekly drag racing programme and provides most respected racing facility in the state. A state-of-the art High-Banked dirt oval race track was added in its venue in 2000. It hosts races each year.
Baytown, as per the US Census Bureau, has a total area of 33.2 square miles. Its 32.7 square miles is land and 0.5 square miles is water. According to the 2000 US Census, it has a total population of 66,430. It is the fourth largest city within the metropolitan area. It has 66,430 inhabitants, 23,483 households and 17,025 families. The city has 26,203 housing units at an average density of 802.4/sq mi.
The racial makeup of Baytown is 67.87% Whites, 13.38% African Americans, 0.51% Native Americans, 0.98% Asians, 0.08% Pacific Islanders, 14.42% from miscellaneous races and 2.77% from two or more races. Its Hispanic race is 60.31%.
