The Battle of Flowers Parade is the oldest and largest parade of Fiesta. It was held at San Antonio amidst a crowd of more than 350,000. It has the distinction of being the only parade in the U.S, entirely by women volunteers. They dressed in yellow and wearing yellow hats, conduct parade with the help of the Texas Army National Guards. Its original purpose is to honor the heroes of the Alamo by paying floral tribute. It is one of the most waited events of the U.S.
The first Battle of Flowers Parade idea was produced (1891) by the wife of a congressman to commemorate the victory at the Battle of San Jacinto following a similar parade in Spain. She formed Parade committee and enlisted the support of community leaders. The first parade was an actual battle with carriages, floats and bicycles going in the opposite direction, throwing fresh flowers at each other. By 1895 the parade became a weeklong celebration. The queen and king were added in 1896. A princess, duchesses and attendants came in 1890.the parade included horseless vehicle in 1901. By 1915-16 artificial flowers were used to cope with the growing participation. In 1973 the tradition of wearing yellow hats began. Members started wearing yellow dresses in 1976. In 1991 it celebrated centennial anniversary. At present it includes around 40 flower-covered floats, military, college and high school bands, cavalcades, antique cars, giant helium balloons and horse-drawn carriages.

The local and visiting R.O.T.C. units as vanguards performs precision drills and entertains the crowds eagerly awaiting the start of the Parade. Sirens and flag carriers announce the beginning of the Parade column. Flower-covered floats with participants adorned in spectacular, colorful costumes, beautiful and striking uniforms featuring local civic and military columns, businesses and members of the Fiesta thrill the delighted spectators. Dozens of military, college, and school bands are interspersed throughout the Parade. They come marching and playing their enthralling music to entertainment all.
