In 1955, she started attracting a lot of critical acclaim portraying the supporting role of Hilda Miller in Plain and Fancy. Because of the good reviews and her clear soprano voice, she got the role of Cunegonde in Candide, Leonard Bernstein's new musical in 1956. After this, her 2 most well-known roles were Marian the Librarian in Meredith Willson's 1957 musical hit The Music Man and Amalia Balash in Jerry Bock-Sheldon Harnick's 1962 musical She Loves Me. She met composer Wally Harper who told her she should do a concert. She made her debut at Carnegie Hall on January 26, 1975, which was successful; she made a popular live album and became a legend. She continued to collaborate with Harper until he died in 2004. She occasionally returned to acting performing in studio cast recordings of stage musicals and creating the role of Margaret White in the musical version of Stephen King's Carrie when it opened in England. She is generally seen as a leading interpreter of musical theater songs and patterns, especially the songs of composer Stephen Sondheim. On September 29, 2007, Cook was the highlighted artist at the Arts! by George gala at George Mason University's Fairfax campus. She sang with the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men's Chorus at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in their concert called "An Evening with Barbara Cook" on October 27, 2007. When they finished the concert, a mostly full house sang a round of "Happy Birthday" to her for her upcoming 80th birthday. Remarkably, she sang with the New York Philharmonic in 2 sold-out concerts at Lincoln Center.

Barbara Cook was born in Atlanta, GA on October 25, 1927; she is a Tony Award-winning singer and actress. Her parents were a traveling hat salesman and a Southern Bell operator. They got divorced when she was a child after her only sister died of whooping cough; Cook lived with her mother and described their relationship as close. She spent three years as a typist after she graduated high school. In 1948, Cook and her mother visited New York; she chose to stay and attempt to find an acting job. In 1949, she got a job on Broadway playing Sandy in the 1951 musical Flahooley, but it was brief. She took roles in revivals of 2 Rogers and Hammerstein sensations: she played Carrie Pipperidge in Carousel and Ado Annie in Oklahoma!
