Independent and largest city of ‘Baltimore’ is a major part of the state of Maryland in the USA. Located in central Maryland at the head of the tidal portion of the Patapsco River at the Chesapeake Bay, this city is approximately 64 km northeast of Washington D.C.

Baltimore was founded in 1729 as a major U.S. seaport. This city is closer to the Midwestern markets. Its Inner Harbor is a major asset that was once considered a second leading port of the entry for immigrants. This city was the main manufacturing center. It is home to Harborplace and the National Aquarium. Baltimore is a service sector-oriented economy after the fall of some of its manufacturing industries.

Despite successful revitalization, Baltimore is still posed with bigger challenges like concentrated poverty, crime and inadequate public education. According to a census data of 2007, total population of Baltimore is 637,455. This city is named after the founding proprietor of the Maryland Colony, Lord Baltimore. He had taken this title from a place in Ireland named Baltimore. It is an Anglicized form of the Irish language Baile an Tí Mhóir, means ‘Town of the Big House.’

The Baltimore Port was created in 1706 to spread tobacco trade. Thereafter, the Town of Baltimore was founded on July 30, 1729. It had tremendous growth in the 18th century as a granary for the sugar-producing colonies of Caribbean.

Baltimore played key role in streamlining the events that led to the American Revolution. It was the site of the Battle of Baltimore during 1812 war. The British attacked Baltimore on the night of September 13, 1814 after burning Washington, D.C. The Baltimore riot of 1968 occurred following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968. This riot cost the city of an estimated loss of $10 million.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Baltimore has a total area of 92.1 square miles, of which, 80.8 square miles is land and 11.3 square miles is water.
