Baden Information: Tickets, Venues, Events and More

The historical state of ‘Baden’ is situated in the southwest of Germany at the right bank of river Rhine. This area was Margraviate of Baden in 12th century. It was later split into different lines that were once again unified after centuries in 1771.

When the Roman Empire was dissolved in 1803–06, Baden turned into a Grand Duchy. Still, it remained a sovereign country until joining the German Empire in 1871. It was a Grand Duchy by 1918 before turning into Weimar Republic as the Republic of Baden. It was surrounded by the Kingdoms of Bavaria in the north and Grand Duchy of Hessen-Darmstadt in the west and by River Rhine, which separated it from Bavarian Rhenish Palatinate, and Alsace in the modern France. Switzerland circled it from the south and the Kingdom of Württemberg from east.

The French military government created the state of Baden after World War II out of the southern half of former Baden with Freiburg as its capital. The southern half of Baden was declared a true successor of old Baden in its 1947 constitution. Its northern half was combined with the northern Württemberg as part of American military zone. These states became states of West Germany upon its formation in 1949.

Baden merged with the Württemberg-Baden and Württemberg-Hohenzollern in 1952. It formed Baden-Württemberg thereafter. The merger of states took place in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany. Baden was only a margraviate at the beginning of 19th century with an area of 1300 sq mi and 210,000 inhabitants. But the Grand Duchy acquired more territory. It already had 5823 sq mi area by 1905. Its population too had reached to 2,009,320, of whom 60% were Roman Catholics, 37% Protestants, 1.5% Jews and the remaining from other confessions.

Half of its population had been, at that point of time, rural. They used to live in the communities of less than 2,000 while the density of the rest was about 330 inhabitants per square mile.
