‘Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen’ district of Bavaria in Germany was established in 1972 by merging two former districts Bad Tölz and Wolfratshausen into one. This district is surrounded by Austria and the districts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Weilheim-Schongau, Starnberg, Munich and Miesbach from the south and clockwise.
It is an alpine district on the German-Austrian border. The Bavarian Alps separates the Karwendel through the valley of upper Isar River. A portion of Alps is located in Austria. The Schafreuter is highest peak of this district. River Isar enters into this it in southwest and runs to the northwards by passing through two main towns of it named Bad Tölz and Wolfratshausen. A series of mountain lakes exist in the high alpine south here including Walchensee at 16 km², Kochelsee at 6 km² and an artificial lake in the course of Isar River, Sylvensteinsee. This district borders Lake Starnberg in the northwest.
With an area of 70,553 km² and almost 12.5 million inhabitants, Bavaria is an important organ of southeast Germany – biggest state in terms of area. Earlier inhabited by the Celts, Bavarians emerged in this region in the north of Alps. They had been the part of Roman provinces of Raethia and Noricum. They preferred to speak Old High German, but unlike other Germanic groups, they did not migrate from anywhere else.
The name of this state, Bavarian means ‘men of Baia.’ It indicates Bohemia as a homeland of Marcomanni. The detailed description of Bavarians had appeared for the first time in a written source in 520. It was in the 8th century that Saint Boniface finished people's conversion to Christianity. Bavaria was dominated by Protestant Reformation religious group then – and even today – a large group of its inhabitants are Roman Catholics.
Bavaria has been rehabilitated into a prosperous industrial hub since World War II. It has hence transformed the entire structure of one of its districts, Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen at the most. That is why this city was exclusively chosen to host 1972 Summer Olympics.
