Background - Nascar Brickyard 400
When NASCAR president Bill France Jr. and Indianapolis Motor Speedway president Tony George announced in February 1993 that NASCAR would race at Indianapolis, it sent a shockwave through the racing community. Many feared the tradition and integrity of the fabled Indianapolis Motor Speedway would be compromised. But the enormous popularity of NASCAR fueled the success of the Brickyard 400.
The Brickyard 400 name is derived from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's nickname. The Speedway has been known as the "Brickyard" since 1909, when the surface of the 2 1/2-mile oval track consisted of 3.2 million bricks. A single strip of bricks, called the "yard of bricks," remains at the track's start/finish line.
NASCAR racing originated in the south in the 1930s, when the government decided to tax moonshine. Moonshine runners modified their cars to outrun the tax officials. When there were no government agents to outrun, they decided to outrun each other. Stock car racing was born.

2004 Season Preview

NASCAR, the acronym for National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing Inc., was started by Bill France in 1948. Stock car racing remained a predominantly Southern sport, racing in the Carolinas, Alabama and Florida. That changed in 1979 when the Daytona 500 became the first nationally televised NASCAR race. NASCAR has become America's fastest growing sport, attracting millions of fans and expanded racing throughout the country and as far away as Australia.
Jeff Gordon in Victory Lane after winning the inaugural Brickyard 400 in 1994. The first Brickyard 400 was held Aug. 6, 1994, before a crowd of more than a quarter-million fans. It had much of the same hoopla as the 500-Mile Race - Florence Henderson sang "America the Beautiful" and Jim Nabors sang the national anthem, balloons were released and a military flyover thrilled the crowd.
Rick Mast sat on the pole, but it was Pittsboro, Ind., native Jeff Gordon who won the inaugural race. During the three hour race, there were only six caution flags and 21 lead changes involving 13 drivers. Gordon took home $613,000 in prize money. The total purse was $3.2 million. On Aug. 5, 2001. Gordon became the first three-time winner of the race.
In 2003, Kevin Harvick became the first driver to win from the pole position.
Jeff Gordon won the 2004 Brickyard 400 - his fourth. It was a race that lasted a record 3 hours, 29 minutes and 56 seconds and had a record 13 caution flags.
Though its history is short, the Brickyard 400 is one of the richest and most prestigious races on the NASCAR circuit. It is also a favorite of drivers and fans alike.
