Background - Gatorade Duel
The Gatorade Duel at Daytona certainly lived up to their new name. Long known as the Gatorade 125's, the races this season were lengthened by 10 laps and renamed the Gatorade Duel at Daytona. In a 'Duel' that race fans have been accustomed to seeing, Michael Waltrip edged his Dale Earnhardt Inc. teammate Dale Earnhardt, Jr. by a mere .030 seconds for the win in the first event.
In the second Gatorade Duel, Tony Stewart held off a hard charging Jeff Burton in a race that included a seven-car incident that included contenders Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, Mark Martin and Rusty Wallace. No drivers were hurt in the incident.

2005 Season Preview
|
 Waltrip, driving the No. 15 NAPA Chevrolet topped Earnhardt Jr. in a thrilling side-by-side battle to the finish line. Waltrip, who has now visited Gatorade Victory Lane five times at Daytona International Speedway with three different crew chiefs, grabbed the lead on the last lap in the last turn. Earnhardt was followed by Mike Skinner, Ryan Newman and Ricky Rudd to round out the top five.
In the second Gatorade Duel, Stewart cruised to a .183-second win over Burton. Rounding out the top five were Kevin Lepage, Martin Truex Jr. and Scott Riggs.
The Gatorade Duel races also were the final chance for many drivers to qualify for The Daytona 500. Racing their way in with strong finishes in the first race were Skinner and Kenny Wallace, while Lepage and Truex Jr. finished well enough in the second Gatorade Duel to qualify. Those four spots were available to the top two drivers in each race that were outside of the top 35 in 2004 owners points.
Other drivers who did not finish high enough in the Gatorade Duel races, but still qualified on speed were Jason Leffler, Boris Said, John Andretti, and Mike Wallace. Among the notable drivers missing the race were Kerry Earnhardt and Robby Gordon along with former Daytona 500 champions Geoffery Bodine and Derrike Cope.
