The Firestone Indy 300 is a 300-mile marathon open-wheel race in Homestead, Florida at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. The race became part of the open wheel circuit in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew. Promoter Ralph Sanchez redeveloped a particularly devastated patch of land in Homestead into an oval racing track. The track was finished in 1996, but the Firestone Indy 300 (then called the Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami presented by Toyota) raced on a street course in 1995.

In 1996 the new track open and the CART Champion Car series remained at the venue until 2001. That year the track switched leagues and suddenly IRL was organizing its season opener at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. The Firestone Indy 300 was lengthened from 200 miles to 300 miles and the track became the preseason course for testing thanks to the fine weather in the area and the excellent condition of the track.

IRL and CART merged in 2008 and suddenly the Firestone Indy 300 moved from the very first on the schedule to the very last. The 2009 race marked the first time the race closed the season and was won by Dario Franchitti on October 10th. His victory was the fourth consecutive win for the Chip Ganassi Racing. Scott Dixon won it in 2008 and Dan Wheldon won the race in 2006 and 2007 for the racing team (Wheldon had won the race in 2005 as well, but while driving for Andretti Green Racing).
