Background - Diehard 500
Two different NASCAR races- UAW Ford 500 and Aaron's 499 were once known as the DieHard 500. Held at Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Alabama the UAW Ford 500 is a NASCAR Nextel Cup stock car race. Through 1996, the race was held in late July or early August. In 1997, on being requested by the fans, it was held in early October due to the uncomfortably hot summer temperatures in the Alabama area. In 1998, the name of the race was swapped with that of the spring race. The fall race was known as the Winston 500 for a few years for promoting the Winston No Bull 5 program.

 Another Nextel Cup stock car race held at Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Alabama is Aaron's 499. The first Aaron's 499 race was held in 1970. Despite its name, the race is over 500 miles in length. The race has always been held in early May or late April. The 1997 event, won by Mark Martin, was the fastest NASCAR race, at an average speed of 188.354 mph.
Held in October 1997, NASCAR Winston Cup Series DieHard 500 marked the 19th victory of Terry Labonte's career. Terry Labonte, helped by a wild 21-car crash that eliminated a dozen top contenders, posted his first victory of the season.
