Daytona Gatorade Duel Tickets Qualifying for the Daytona 500, through its use if the Gatorade Duel, is unique in NASCAR, with only the front row – pole and outside pole – starters being established through the conventional qualifying means of timed laps. After the top two positions are determined, the rest of the starting grid is set by the finishing order of the two Gatorade Duel races. The entire Daytona 500 field is split into two groups, with each racing in one of the qualifying races; the finishing order of the first race fills the odd grid positions, while the finish order of the second qualifier fills the even ones. The Duel event originated as twin 100-mile races, and from 1959-1971 were counted with points going towards the Grand National championship, and prize money counted separately from the Daytona 500. Beginning in 1968 the races were scheduled to be lengthened to 125 miles each, but cancelled due to rain, and leaving the starting lineup for the Daytona 500 to fall back on timed laps. In 1969, the races were actually run for 125 miles, or 50 laps; now requiring fuel stop, teams were challenged to change prior pit stop strategies. With the commencement of NASCAR's modern era in 1971, the Gatorade Duel races were dropped as points-paying events for the Grand National Championship; as part of Winston Cup's changes to the series, races were now required to be at least 250 miles in order to accumulate official Championship points. The Duel races continued; serving only as the Daytona 500 qualifier and for whatever prize money was awarded, but no longer for any official points.

 With the reduction in speed and fuel consumption, due to the introduction of restrictor plates in 1988, drivers were now once again able to finish the Gatorade Duel without stopping. From 1988-2004, nine races went without either a caution or a pit stop by the winner, resulting in further rule changes put in place which required smaller fuel tanks on restrictor plate tracks (from 22 to 13 gallons), which again effectively forced at least one pit stop. In 2005, besides being renamed the Gatorade Duel, the races were increased to 150 miles and given a revised format. Catering to NASCAR's new Top 35 exemption, the grids changed from even-odd qualifiers to a combination of top 35 even-odd from the previous year's owner points and then the rest of the drivers' by speed. A rain delay in 2006 saw the second race finish under the lights. Dale Earnhardt holds the record for winning Gatorade Duel races a total of 12 times, while amazingly winning ten consecutive from 1990-1999. In 2008, a NASCAR milestone was reached when Denny Hamlin won the second Gatorade Duel on February 14, 2008, making him the first ever Sprint Cup driver to take the checkered flag while driving a Toyota. NASCAR fans should get tickets now and plan to leave early for their trip to Daytona; not just to beat the crowds for the Gatorade Duel on February 11, 2010, but to partake in all of the mid-week racing festivities that accompany the Duel at historic Daytona International Speedway.
