Background - Daytona 500
NASCAR's all-around champion, Jeff Gordon, went one-on-one with its superspeedway ace, Dale Earnhardt Jr., to win in a hectic overtime finish to Sunday's Daytona 500. Gordon said he was "shocked" he was able to shoot past Earnhardt, who has had the strongest car at Daytona International Speedway in recent years, with little more than two laps left in the race's regulation distance.
Another driver farther back in the pack crashed after Gordon made his move, prompting NASCAR officials to extend the race by two laps under an overtime provision established last season. But Gordon was able to hold on to the lead. "Any time Junior's a part of a victory — having his fan base, knowing his track record here — it's rewarding," Gordon said.
The victory was Gordon's third in a race that is considered the sport's version of football's Super Bowl, even though Daytona is the first points-paying race of the season. It also showed that Gordon's Hendrick Motorsports team remains strong despite an airplane crash in October that claimed team owner Rick Hendrick's son, Ricky, his brother, John, and several other family members and key racing team personnel.
Gordon dedicated the victory to the victims of the crash. In an effort to control speeds at its two longest high-banked tracks, NASCAR requires teams to build engines to different technical specifications for races at Daytona and Talladega Superspeedway. The main difference in a superspeedway-spec engine is the restrictor plate, a device that chokes off horsepower by limiting the amount of air flowing into an engine.

With reduced horsepower, it's harder for cars to pass each other. But over the years — restrictor plates have been used since the late 1980s, when speeds were creeping above 200 mph — drivers have discovered they can team up to pass a driver in front of them or hold off a driver behind them.
The idea of drivers making loose alliances at 185 mph — such deals often are set up over the drivers' in-car radio systems, using crewmembers as go-betweens on pit road — has established an odd etiquette among those who do it best. Sometimes a second-place driver helps the first-place driver win. Sometimes he doesn't. The tricky part is deciding whom to trust, and the answer is usually nobody.
In a nearly identical situation last spring at Talladega, a heavily partisan crowd angrily threw beer and soda cans and seat cushions onto the track after NASCAR said Gordon was ahead of Earnhardt when the caution came out near the end of the race. Gordon went on to win that race under caution.
That reaction prompted new NASCAR chairman Brian France to change the rule and allow a two-lap sprint for the win when a caution comes out before the final scheduled lap.
The victory was the 70th for Gordon, who barely missed his fifth series title last year when he finished just 16 points behind Busch and eight behind Hendrick Motorsports teammate Johnson in the closest points race in NASCAR history.
Gordon averaged 135.173 mph, winning $1,474,466 from the record purse of $17 million.
"I didn't know what the week had in store for us," Gordon said. "I knew we had a good car. We hadn't shown everything. I knew over 500 miles, with that pit crew, that team that hopefully some patience would pay off there at the end."
