Apocalyptica is a heavy metal band from Finland. Based in Helsinki, the band consists of four members, namely Eicca Toppinen, Max Lilja, Antero Manninen and Pavvo Lotjonen. The band was formed in 1993, the members are all classically trained cellists. The band wanted to combine their formal musical training with their love for heavy metal music.
The band made head turn in 1996 when they released their debut album, "Apocalyptica Plays Metallica by Four Cellos." The album was praised by critics and was appreciated by both classical and metal enthusiasts. The band's next album already had high expectations. Apocalyptica didn't let anyone down. They released, "Inquisition Symphony" in 1998. The album was also well received and consisted of covers of numbers by Faith No More and Pantera.
