Angelique Kidjo, whose work has garnered her three Grammy nominations, has combined the West African traditions of her childhood in Benin with styles of American R&B, funk and jazz, as well as influences from Europe and Latin America. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with a diverse group of international artists like Santana and Dave Matthews. Angélique was born in a village called Ouidah in Benin, West Africa. When she was six, she toured around with her mother and her mother's theater group, whcich became the influence for her future career. In 1983, Angélique snuck out of Benin and moved to Paris due to the political situation in Benin. It was a Communism Dictatorship, and the government put pressure on artists to sing about communism. She entered a jazz school and joined a band called Pili Pili, a jazz band from Holland. She toured with them for a few years and recorded five albums with them, including a live album which reflects the same energy Angélique shows on her own stage. She began her solo career in 1990, releasing an album on Island records called Parakou.

She opened for The Dave Matthew's band min the middle of her 2002 tour. That same year she was appointed UNICEF's Special Representative on behalf of children's education and the education to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. She has just released her latest album, Oyaya, which brings together Caribbean and Cuban rhythms.
