Andy Summers is the famous guitarist of the band Police. After the Police broke up he embarked on a solo career. He has made a name for himself as a solo artist as well. His music is mostly new age-influenced contemporary instrumental music. Andy was born on December 31, 1942 as Andrew James Somers in Lancashire, England. As a child, Somers moved to Bournemouth as a child, and here he took up the guitar at the age of 14. By the time he turned 16, he was performing across the local club scene, he was noticed here by Zoot Money and was asked to join his "Big Roll Band." He soon appeared with the band on a live album. The group soon disbanded and Somers signed up with Soft Machine for a while, he eventually rejoined Money in a revamped Animals lineup and released the LP "Love Is." But the group didn't last long and in 1969 Somers decided to study classical guitar and composition at UCLA. Side by side he gave guitar lessons and played with a local Latin-rock band and also tried his hand at acting. Somers changed his name and changed his surname to Summers so that his name could be pronounced properly. He then met Sting and Stewart Copeland in 1977, at that time he was playing with a band called Strontium 90. Both artists asked him to join their new outfit which they called Police. Summers agreed and the three together developed their own style that revolved around jazz- and reggae-influenced pop/rock. The Police allowed Summers the luxury to experiment with subtle sonic textures and colors on his guitar. Summers took his first steps towards being as solo artist in 1982. He partnered with King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp on I Advance Masked and followed it up in 984 with Bewitched, the album was released around the same time that Police officially called it quits.

Summers then decided to establish himself as a solo artist and move into other forms and styles of music. His made his solo debut in 1987 with the album XYZ, the album did not get a very encouraging response. But Summers was resilient and came back with another album in 1988 titled "Mysterious Barricades." The album was successful and displayed Summer's prowess as a sensible and talented musician. He continued his style in his future albums throughout the 90's including "The Golden Wire in 1989, Charming Snakes in 1991, World Gone Strange in 1991, Invisible Thread in 1993 and The Last Dance of Mr. X in 1997. He also collaborated with many musicians, for his 1998 album "Strings of Desire," he teamed up with South American guitar virtuoso Victor Biglione and for his 1999 album "Green Chimneys: Music of Thelonious Monk" saw Summers working with a large ensemble. He also had a reunion with Sting for a version of the song "'Round Midnight." His next compilation of songs was an an album that had interpretations of compositions by Charles Mingus. The album was called "Peggy's Blue Skylight," and was released in late 2000. His album "Earth + Sky" appeared in music stored about four years later.
