Andreas Vollenweider was born on 4th October 1953 in Zürich, Switzerland. His father Hans Vollenweider, is a renowned organist in Europe. Because of his father's profession, Andreas came into contact with music at a very early age. He learnt to pay the guitar and a wide range of musical instruments. In 1975, Andreas discovered the Harp, He developed his own technique and modified the instrument to suit his own style. Not only did he construct a damper to expedite more rhythmic playing, he broadened the harp's tonal range by electrifying it.
Andreas Vollenweider gained the status of a superstar when his albums simultaneously topped Billboard's pop, jazz, and classical charts in 1986. His funky beats, exotic pan-cultural influences, and amazing harp improvisations began to sweep Europe in the early '80s. Andreas released his first solo Album in 1979/80 titled, "A Form of Suite in XIII Parts." He then signed with CBS Records to release Behind the Gardens...Behind the Wall in 1981. The album received a tremendous response and was a hit the world over.

Three more albums followed, Caverna Magic in 1982, White winds in 1984 and Down to the Moon in 1986. He won his first Grammy Award for Down to the Moon in 1987. Over the years, Vollenweider has managed to sustain his artistic integrity and vision despite becoming such a phenomenal commercial success. His 1991 album, "Book of Roses" is a testament to his ability to expand his scope as a composer.
He is generally categorized as part of the New Age genre of musicians. His music is dynamic and volatile. His primary instrument is still the electrically modified harp, but he performs with a wide variety of instruments. His music has mostly been instrumental in nature but he has occasionally forayed into vocal music as well. His has collaborated with a wide range of artists from around the world that include Bobby McFerrin, Carly Simon, Luciano Pavarotti and Milton Nascimento
He returned in 1998 with his unique style when he issued Kryptos and followed that two years later with Cosmopoly. He is a musician who music has remained unadulterated and original ever since his first composition. He has performed and sold out auditoriums the world over.
