Altan is a band which plays traditional Irish music. Band formed in 1981 hails from County Donegal, Ireland.
Altan currently comprises of six members Dermot Byrne on accordion, fiddle by Ciarán Tourish, bouzouki, guitar by Mark Kelly, guitar by Dáithí Sproule, bouzouki by Ciarán Curran and Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh on fiddle, vocals. Altan for more than 25 years have entertained people by some very good and melodious music. They often play at concerts in front of sold out audience. Their concerts are fun to see playing some magical numbers created by Altan over the years.

Two former members of Altan were Frankie Kennedy and Paul O'Shaughnessey who played a very important role in making what Altan today is especially Kennedy. Frankie Kennedy used to hop nop between Belfast and Donegal. He was learning Irish and playing music. There he met his future wife Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh. In 1983 they released their first album "Ceol Aduaidh". Mairéad was a great player of fiddle which she learned from her father Francie Mooney who was also a famous fiddle player. Soon they achieved lot of popularity for an outstanding voice of Mairéad and her excellent play of fiddle. Husband duo was soon joined by Ciarán Curran playing bouzouki and guitarist Mark Kelly. In 1987 foursome released their first album entitled " Altan". But till now they hadn't adopted name of Altan for their group. It was only adopted after release of second album " Horse With A Heart".

For Green Linnet they recorded four successful albums. Album were hit both in United States of America as well Ireland. In 1990 "The Red Crow" followed by "Harvest Storm' in 1991. In 1993 two albums were released "
" Island Angel " and " Once Again 1987- 93". Paul O'Shaughnessey a fiddle player was also part of Altan for many years. After leaving band he was replaced by another player of fiddle Ciarán Tourish. . In 1992 Dáithí Sproule joined them on guitar. In 1992 tragedy struck when Frankie Kennedy was diagnosed with cancer and died in 1994. In 1996 Altan signed with Virgin and in 2003 at BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards they won award for Best Group. Albums of band achieved gold and platinum status. They have staged many performances around the globe with concerts held in New Zealand, Europe, Japan, Australia and U.S

Altan have been consistently given rave reviews by press as well. Chicago Weekly said " Thought by many to be the finest traditional Irish combo working today, Altan seamlessly blend dazzling instrumental prowess and the gorgeously delicate vocals of Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh".

The Sunday Tribune, Dublin reported "The appeal of Altan centres on the fact that they see no differences or divisions in music. As such, they have managed to cross the all- important cultural barriers between folk and world and rock music".
