Born on Jan 14, 1938, Allen Toussaint is an influential and multi-talented American musician, songwriter and record producer. Allen is regarded as one of the most powerful personalities in New Orleans R&B. He is credited for writing several hits for artists like Lee Dorsey, and Willie West, who has voiced the title track for Robert Palmer, The Showmen, The Meters, Black Samson and Solomon Burke as well produced outstanding work for Dr John, Labelle, and Art and Aaron Neville in 1960s and 1970s.
He has established himself as an accomplished pianist, lyricist and a successful arranger. Toussaint possess credits for writing numerous songs which continue to be covered by artists to date. His famous works include "Working in the Coalmine", "Brickyard Blues", "Get Out My Life Woman" and "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky". He has penned down some of his songs including "Ruler of My Heart", recorded by Irma Thomas, from the 1950s and 1960s under the false name, Naomi Neville. Later this song was reinterpreted as "Pain in My Heart" by Otis Redding. Toussaint also arranged horn music for The Band's album "Cahoots" in 1971. He also arranged horn parts into their concert repertoire.

After stepping into the music industry he soon launched his own solo career. He was way too successful in all his efforts and became favorite of all in the '70s with the albums "From a Whisper" to "Scream and Southern Nights". For most of the time in his career, he has partnered with Marshall Sehorn. They created and operated together, the Sea-Saint recording studio in the neighborhood of New Orleans. Both of them also partnered in an unstable multi-named record label. Together with many other contemporariesof his time, Toussaint noticed that his compositions aroused a new interest again when in 1980s and 1990s, his work started to be heavily sampled by many hip hop artists. Allen was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
Though many rumors were spread about his move, Toussaint did not take resorted to the Louisiana Superdome in the backwash of the Hurricane Katrina disaster. In fact, he worn out the storm in the Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel. After the hurricane aftermath, he moved to New York City, where he is currently residing while his house has been rebuilt. He made his first television appearance after the hurricane, on September 7, 2005 on episode of "The Late Show with David Letterman", along with with Paul Shaffer and his CBS Orchestra. Toussaint is famous for his performance each month at Joe's Pub in New York City.
Toussaint released his album "The River In Reverse" on may 29, 2006, in collaboration with Elvis Costello. It was released by Universal Classics and Jazz UCJ, in the UK on the Verve label. According the Press Release for the album, it has been recorded in Toussaint's native New Orleans and Hollywood.
