"Musically, Alejandro Escovedo is in his own genre." David Fricke, Rolling Stone

When Rolling Stones' David Fricke describes Alejandro Escovedo to be "...his own genre", few can disagree. Alejandro has been hailed as everything a musical genius can possibly be and more! His versatility is only complimented with his diverse experience, from punk to rock & roll. He blends rock, folk, blues and classically influenced music into a boundary-defying style that has helped him create his own genre & have a faithful fan- following that cannot be boasted by many contemporary artists.

A life that spans from experimenting range of musical experiences to a near- death collision with Hepatitis C, Alejandro has grown to be a legend in more ways than one. Even though life has not exactly been 'perfect', he has been blessed with rewards & joys that are unparalleled. Not only have Alejandro's albums enjoyed widespread critical acclaim but his songs have even inspired an acclaimed theatrical work- By the Hand of the Father and a 32-track tribute album- Por Vida, on which his musical friends, fans and even some heroes recorded Escovedo's compositions to help raise funds for him at the time when he fell short to pay for his medical expenses for the treatment of Hepatitis.

After his initial years spent in supporting various bands and tours, Alejandro cut his first solo album Gravity (1992) followed by Thirteen Years (1993), With These Hands (1996), More Miles Than Money: Live 1994-1996 (1998), Bourbonitis Blues (1999) and A Man Under The Influence (2001).

Born into a large Mexican family in San Antonio, Escovedo inherited his father's love for music who often sang in local mariachi bands. His career began with The Nuns, a mid-'70s punk outfit from San Francisco; later, he co-founded the country-influenced punk band Rank and File. He began to make a name for himself in True Believers with national tours supporting the likes of Los Lobos, and his solo career took off with 1992's critically acclaimed Gravity. Since then, Escovedo has recorded eight albums under his own name, in the process winning numerous awards and accolades, including "Artist of the Decade" from No Depression magazine.

Alejandro's latest album The Boxing Mirror, produced by musical maestro John Cale in 2006, speaks of all that he had to go through in recent times with underlying feel of understanding mortality. The album builds on Alejandro's creative history and balances toughness with his new found serenity and understanding. The album portrays how Alejandro came out of his harrowing illness into the dawn of new appreciation of life.

Spanning a musical range from the Mexican-American music of his family heritage to modernist and even danceable pop-rock, The Boxing Mirror is the creative culmination of Escovedo's journey from the brink of death to wellness and an enhanced creativity and wisdom. The signature Escovedo style is carried onto this album as well but its mixed with lots more panache & punch. All this is a great accomplishment for someone who was feared to never perform again.

Alejandro is a concert- goers delight, playing for hours with electric performances that will never leave his audience bored. They can be full on punk or he can stop it all on a dime and tear the room's collective heart out with a sparse, harrowing confessional. Alejandro keeps his audience on- edge and engaged through the unpredictability of his performance & swinging in- between various stylistic performances- from rock & roll to a string quintet. One can never really know what to expect.

For an artist who earned major part of his living from concerts, Alejandro has ‘done it all', from touring with rock bands, string quintet to performing his own orchestra in hometown-Austin. He also toured Europe and cut an album with Walter Salas-Humara of The Silos and Michael Hall of The Wild Seeds as The Setters and played and recorded an album with his hard rocking foursome Buick MacKane.

Escovedo's astounding combination as a writer, singer and arranger can be felt in all his work that has earned him rapturous critical acclaim, that too for an artist who is still finding his way to widespread acclaim. And everyone is waiting for that, well deserved, moment to finally arrive!
