Akwid is a Mexican-American musical band. It combines Spanish language hip hop style lyrics with local Sinaloese banda music and beats. An earlier living form of the group was branded as Juvenile Style. Vocalists Sergio 'Wikid' GÃÆ'³mez and the other vocalist Francisco 'AK' GÃÆ'³mez, who lead the group, are actually two brothers who were initially from Jiquilpan, MichoacÃÆ'¡n, and now live at Los Angeles, California. Wikid and A K are their nick names which they kept after they went on to form a band by the name of Akwid.
The brothers were from the start of their career obsessed with the beats and the rap style attitudes of American hip-hop singers. So they went on to blend that with their original Mexican music. The band started off well getting great acclaim from fans. Akwid continued to enjoy sturdy exposure in 2004 also and finished up successfully a promotional tour of Mexico and are now aiming for stateside cross to the mainstream music. The latest album of the Akwid was 'Los Aguacates de Jiquilpan' and was quite successful in the previous year.
Their very first album, Proyecto Akwid, was a big success and won two Billboard Prizes plus a Latin Grammy Award for the Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album. It went for Platinum sales in the Latin market (200,000 sales), more or less completely on the basis of sales to resident Spanish-speakers.
