Airbourne is the pub rocking group with long hair and thrashing guitars that many music critics compare to AC/DC. The group began in 2003 when brothers Joel and Ryan O'Keeffe finally felt that their skill on the guitar and the drums had come along far enough to move from playing in their house in Warrnambool, Australia to trying to put together a band. The first recruit was lead guitarist David Roads. Joel and David worked together at a hotel and would jam after work. Bassist Justin Street joined after accepting an invitation to jam from a drunk, stumbling Ryan. With Joel as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist and Ryan as the drummer the group began to work toward actually getting out selling some Airbourne tickets.
The band released an independent EP with eight tracks fittingly named Ready to Rock in 2004. Airbourne followed the record release with a move to Melbourne. The move proved to be pinnacle in their signing a five album contract deal with Capitol Records. They took the road selling tickets as a supporting act to Motley Crue, Motorhead, and the Rolling Stones.
The first major record release from the band was Runnin' Wild. The 2007 album was produced by Bob Marlette and was in June. Before the album was released Capitol Records had cancelled their contract, so the group got EMI to help distribute their debut full length album. Since then the group has toured to sell tickets and albums and to promote the Airbourne brand of rock.
