During the early phase of his career, Ahmad Jamal, was dismissed as a cocktail stylist. However, with his consistency, perseverance and determination, he is now recognised as one of the all-time greatest jazz pianists.
After gaining fame, Jamal started touring in different nations. It is since the 1980s that Jamal has not stopped touring major clubs of the United States and the large European jazz festivals. Artist Biography - Ahmad Jamal
Ahmad Jamal, an American Jazz Pianish of high esteem was born as Frederick Russell Jones on July 2, 1930 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.
He completed his schooling from George Westinghouse High School. He adopted Islamism in early 1950s and rechristened himself as 'Ahmad Jamal'.
Owing to his expertise in playing piano, Jamal happened to be one of Miles Davis's favorite pianists. He also was a key influence on the trumpeter's "First Great Quintet" that is known for featuring John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Jamal's use of space and dynamics is very much admired by Davis.
All the renowned artists like Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette, and Gary Peacock do tale Jamal as a major influence owing to his exceptional mastery in using rhythm and space and also for his innovative use of multi-tonal melodic lines.
