Adam Ant , born Stuart Leslie Goddard, changed his name after becoming obsessed with rock music. Adam formed the band Adam and the Ants with guitarist Lester Square, bassist Andy Warren, and drummer Paul Flanagan in London in 1977 despite the fact that the lineup was unstable. The band released their debut, Dirk Wears White Sox, on the independent label Do It in 1979. The album ultimately failed to become a commercial success, and they decided to reshape their image by hiring Malcolm McLaren, the manager of the Sex Pistols. He suggested a more accessible and pop-oriented, rhythmic variation on punk, and dressed the band in pirate uniforms. McLaren had persuaded the ants to leave Adam, and Adam went on to for a new version of the band. The new band's first album, 1980's Kings of the Wild Frontier, became an enormous hit in the U.K., launching three Top Ten hit singles, including the number two "Ant Music."

Prince Charming, released the following year, had two number one singles, "Stand and Deliver" and "Prince Charming." After Prince Charming, Adam Ant left the Ants for a solo career. His first solo album, Friend or Foe, was released in 1982 and featured the number one single "Goody Two Shoes" and the Top Ten title track. Although his next album, Strip, had some success, it pretty much marked the end for Adam. Adam returned in 1995 to record the album Wonderful. This album shaped him into a more mature pop rocker since he accompanied acoustic guitars on most of the songs. The album was only a moderate success in both the U.K. and the U.S. Adam has become one of the influential figures of new wave scene, and he recorded several great pop singles that had a surprisingly large impact on alternative rock.
