This musical concert features three superb live performers from the African continent. This journey termed as the Acoustic Africa tour comprises Habib Koité who is a Malian superstar. Habib has gained enormous fame worldwide with his exciting concert performances. Another talent is Vusi Mahlasela who is a well known and powerful singer-songwriter. He is a singer of themes of struggle and hope in the townships of South Africa. Third artist is a newcomer Dobet Gnahore from Ivory Coast who is new but has stunned the audience across Africa and Europe, by her vibrant performance and music.
Putumayo has made its stand as one of the world's most successful record labels by conducting this extraordinary and unique Acoustic Africa tour which indicates the careful selection of universally pleading and attractive music. Artist Biography - Acoustic Africa
The three artist performing in Acoustic Africa include Habib Koité. Koite has made his name in music world by his astonishing music reflecting diverse musical traditions of his Malian homeland. Koite was born in 1958 in Khassonké, near the border of Senegal. He learned and developed a unique style in guitar accompanying his griot mother. Koité has launched many successful and critically acclaimed albums with his band Bamada. His albums include "Ma Ya" and "Baro" on label Putumayo. Additionally Koité also performed on the "The Late Show" along with David Letterman, in leading magazines like "People and Rolling Stone", and also on "All Things Considered" of National Public Radio . He recorded with Bonnie Raitt on her album "Silver Lining" in 2002. Habib and his band have been performing for the last 10 years in more than 600 concerts in distant locations like Japan, Australia, Brazil and Kazakhstan. They are always remembered for their excellent stage performance and proficient musicianship.
Another renowned talent of Acoustic Africa is Vusi Mahlasela. Native of South Africa, Vusi Mahlasela grew up in a musical background listening traditional African songs. He learned guitar at a very young age himself. Vusi was a gifted child with awesome talent of singing and songwriting. His amazing voice and extraordinary songwriting led him a special place in contemporary South African music. He appeared in "Amandla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony", a famous movie based on the importance of music and song in South Africa's anti-apartheid struggle. Dave Matthews is one of the big supporter of Visu who invited him to give guest vocal on the title song of the Dave Band's super hit album "Everyday". After signing to ATO Records, Dave launched Visu's album "The Voice" in 2003.
Dobet Gnahoré is young and energetic singer from the Ivory Coast who has thrilled the audience in Africa and Europe with her spirited performances. Dobet was trained from his childhood by her father . Her father, Boni Gnahoré, taught her the music and dance traditions of the Bété people. Boni is also a renowned performer in West Africa. Dobet's music reflects wonderfully a combination of Mandingo music, Congolese rumba, ziglibiti from the Ivory Coast and Cameroonian bikutsi. She sings in many African languages. The Acoustic Africa tour is US debut for Dobet.
