The city of ‘Abilene’ is located in the central part of the U.S. state of Texas. According to the census that was held in the year 2000, the population of the city was 115,930 denizens.

It is the main city of the Abilene Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area had an estimated population of more than 158,063 in the year 2006. Abilene is the county seat of Taylor County. Dyess Air Force Base is located to the west of Abilene city.

The city is located 150 miles west of Fort Worth, Texas and is situated off Interstate 20, between exits 279 on its western edge and 292 on the east. Abilene is looped by I-20 to the north, US 83/84 on the west and Loop 322 to the east.

The city of Abilene is divided into two parts- North and South, with the help of a railroad. The historic downtown area is situated on the north side of the railroad.

According to a Dallas newspaper, “about eight hundred people had already begun camping at the town site, before the lots were sold.”

Colonel J. Stoddard Johnson laid out the town and the auction of lots started on March 15, in the year 1881. It was said that after the commencement of the initial day, 139 lots were sold for a total of $23,810 and the next 178 lots were sold for $27,550. These lots were sold the next day only.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 110.6 square miles (286.5 km²), of which, 105.1 square miles (272.3 km²) of it is land and 5.5 square miles (14.2 km²) of it is water (4.95%).

Abilene civic center is the most famous arena of the city.
