5th Dimension Tickets for Sale

5th Dimension originated when the three boys Lamonte McLemore, Ron Townson and Billy Davis Jr grouped together in Los Angeles in the summer of 1965 to form 'The Versatiles'. Originally from St. Louis, Missouri each of them left their hometown to fulfill their own different musical dreams unbeknownst of what the future had in store. They hailed from different musical backgrounds - jazz, opera, and gospel/ R & B respectively. While still a student at Washington Tech, Billy Davis was also a member of many Gospel and Soul groups. Eventually he zeroed in on Los Angeles to open a nightclub while still harboring recording dreams. Lamonte pursued professional baseball and photography though ending up in the Navy only to realize his real calling-singing. Ron was an operatic singer. After completing his studies in Lincoln University, he came to Los Angeles with dreams of a musical career.

Marilyn Mc Coo, their first singer was spotted by Lamonte who photographed her at the Miss California Bronze Talent Award in 1962. On being asked by the boys to join, she finished her studies at UCLA first to satiate her parents. Florence LaRue, the winner of the same competition was also initiated by Lamonte to join the group. Her true aspirations lay in acting despite studying at Cal Tech and becoming a teacher. However, she joined too.

Now a group, rehearsals began. Their demo tape was not received well until it reached the ears of recording artist Johnny Rivers . In 1966, Johnny signed them on his Soul City Label, under the condition they changed their name. 'The Versatiles' resurrected as The 5th Dimension where they released their first not very memorable single' I'll be loving you forever'. However, a cover of 'Go where you wanna Go ' by the 'Mamas and the Papas' was to bring them some fame. Later the group would switch labels to Bell/ Arista Records ABC Records and Motown Records. With the street-smarts they had, they knew working with budding songwriters would be their breakthrough. Therefore began their journey with working with Jimmy Webb, who in 1967 gave the group their first top 10 success, 'Up, Up and Away'. This brought the group Five Grammy awards and mainstream credibility. Hits such as Laura Nyro's 'Stoned Soul Picnic' and 'Sweet Blindness' led them to their first Gold record. Ashford & Simpson, newcomers then, wrote 'California Soul' included in the same album.

Much success followed in the late 1960s and early 1970's, with tracks like the monster hit 'Aquarius/Let the Sunshine in' ( from the musical 'Hair'), Nyro's 'Wedding Bell Blues', 'One less bell to answer', 'love's lines, angles and rhymes', 'never my Love' and 'I didn't get to sleep at all'.

Billy Davis Jr. and Marilyn McCoo married and left the group to attempt careers as a solo and duet. They had some success as a duo with 'I Hope you get to love in time' and 'You don't have to be a star to be in my show'. The band wasn't n the charts for some time. They changed labels to Motown for two albums in 1978. Lou Cartney, joined the group as vocalist for a while in 1978-79, and Phyllis battle in the mid 1980's.

To the joy of fans, the originally set-up re-united for a tour in 1990. In 1995, after signing up with Click Records,LaRue, Townson, McLemore, Phyllis Battle(Who joined in 1980) and Greg Walker recorded 'In the House'.

In 1991, the original quintet received a Star at the Walk of Fame. Now, pursuing solo careers, the group unites for tours and and sells thousands of tickets for performances to entertain fans and lovers of R & B Soul l music alike.

5th Dimension, a band with melodious harmonies and catchy hooks had fans who loyally bought tickets or records every time they performed whether in a bar or a concert. For the album 'Stoned Soul Picnic', Frank Sinatra presented The 5th Dimension with a Gold record at Caesar's Palace. 'Our voices were all tired, we'd been performing there for over a month. It was the quickest thing we ever recorded and it was one of our biggest hits' said La Rue, of 'Aquarius/Let the Sunshine in'. The group always shared a symbiotic relationship with songwriters.
